The zero-fill being free is actually a pretty neat compiler optimization trick that Go will detect if it fits their pattern: Benchmarks and comparison of the different zero-fill methods:

We're talking about orders of nanoseconds, but these are getting super optimized. For example, this goes to what I'd consider "nearly free" operation. The wire protocol has places where you zero-fill specifics bytes. This is now "free".
