Back in February I got
@jesiblanchard
on the phone and realized I had to ask my boss
@AMontgomery_998
to send me to Georgia. I just knew I needed to visit Jessie in person (something that is rare and difficult when you host a daily show!). I'm so grateful Alicia said yes. (1/?)
All I want is for Kamala Harris to be recruiting Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dolly Parton to go on a road show to sell voting rights. It could happen y’all
I love how Dexter Filkins describes
@RanaAyyub
in the
@NewYorker
this week: she "speaks with disorienting speed and infectious warmth; it is difficult to resist answering her questions." Hear her voice 👉
I'm going to save you tens of thousands of dollars on journalism school and tell you that the most important question you'll ever ask in an interview is "how do you know that?"
This line about should make a lot of journalists think - not just at NPR: "[Our] culture encouraged an editorial fixation on finding the exact middle point of the elite political and social thought, planting a flag there, and calling it objectivity."
I was devastated to get the news that my former colleague Richard Hake has died. He was a generous coworker (and union shop head). And a New Yorker through and through. His dad was NYPD. Here’s how I want to remember him. (THREAD)
So Alabama really did this. Worth remembering that minors impregnated by incest (who this law would ban from getting an abortion) are not theoretical in Alabama. A couple of years back a 12yo sought an abortion for this reason:
If you are looking to be fully informed before tomorrow’s argument about affirmative action may I recommend this conversation from THREE YEARS AGO with
@ElieNYC
which still slaps
What makes this story truly haunting is imagining how this case would play out if the parents weren't BOTH doctors, professionally connected to their accusers, able to have Harvard experts weigh in on their behalf
Why so much movement behind bills restricting how folks vote? At least in GA, the Dems beat the Rs at their own game.
@AriBerman
-- and the legislators pushing against these laws -- explain:
There is no better metaphor for the unrequited love that is parenthood than the tenderly prepared lunchbox that returns at the end of the day completely intact save the ritz bits
@jesiblanchard
@AMontgomery_998
Finally, last night, I got to share the story we've been working on since that trip, a true collaboration with the magical geniuses at
@ThisAmerLife
and
@Slate
. It's a thrill for this work to be in the world, and reaching your ears. (2/?)
I’ve been at so many workplaces where Black and brown employees simply left because there didn’t seem to be room for them at the table. It’s meaningful that employees
@WNYC
believe in their institution enough to stay and demand more. It’s a kind of love.
Finally, listening to
@edyong209
, even when he tells you the most terrible stuff -- is somehow... soothing? He wants you to get ready for our pandemic future, stop waiting around for a vaccine, and vote:
Went to the playground. Ran into a principal and a vice principal from my kids’ school. Wish you’d all been there to see the look of disbelief on their faces when they learned schools were reopening from a PARENT WHATSAPP GROUP ffs 🤦🏻♀️
OK, parental leave. NPR just negotiated for 20 weeks. WaPo is at 20 weeks too. We're at *11*. Here is an argument from THE BLACKSTONE GROUP for more leave. It is from 2017. In the Wall Street Journal.
ICYMI, this pretty much sums up my appearance on MSNBC this weekend: me laughing my face off with
@ElieNYC
and
@kendisgibson
. Also: I gotta tweet when someone does my hair
If you want to know how good Caliphate is u should know I tried to punch in my NYT username/pword *during a run* today in order to access epi 2, like a real addict. congrats
@rcallimachi
Man, it was fun to have one of those old timey rollicking conversations about politics this morning with
@DrJasonJohnson
. Spent all of Kamala's speech wishing I could just, like, text with him:
How today’s interview from inside a closet ended: an announcement that there was a “special delivery”, a note shoved under the closet door, and a message (about Mother’s Day?) that felt slightly ominous
I live in a very New York apartment where one of my kids’ rooms is only as wide as a twin bed. Last night I wedged an IKEA bed frame in here and it is stuck. Today I’m attempting to parallel park the bed. Send good vibes
There's this saying: "wins don't stay won" when it comes to civil rights. No better example of that than what's going on with FL voters right now.
@mjs_DC
with the full story:
I can't stop thinking about this line from the James Carville profile in the Times and all I can say is it is so much easier to have "fun" when your fundamental human rights are not being constantly litigated (often not in your favor) 🤷♀️
Being in self isolation with a 5yo who has developed a sudden affinity for “Bye Bye Birdie” is a little like being trapped with the ghost of Phyllis Schlafly
This gives me a good opportunity to say: I just did my last formal interview... for three weeks. I'm taking a lil break. I love my job with my whole heart, and I have never in my working life taken this much time off. But it feels necessary.
I love that this
@NPRinskeep
story doesn’t give you the thing you’ve been trained to expect from adoption stories (a reunion) and keeps turning your head towards a wholly different idea (consent)
Being an adult is such a pain that every day I try to do one thing simply because I, an adult human, can. Anyway today that thing was eating strawberry shortcake for breakfast, would recommend 14/10
Asian Americans have legitimate concerns about Harvard's admissions policies, and those concerns were erased and replaced by the white conservative movement's endless quest to kill affirmative action. And that is really a shame. My latest in
@thenation
Lots of things to recommend this
@rtraister
profile of Tish James, but my favorite is this bit. Back when she was on city council, Tish made the phone company remove the broken pole in my back yard. Still grateful!
My 13 yo just had his first public radio driveway moment (“mom don’t turn off the car!”) for this week’s Snap Judgment. Thanks
@Andy_Marra
@glynnwashington
It wouldn’t be a visit to the Supreme Court without answering a question from
@NinaTotenberg
. It was a joy, and she clearly lives by my rule: don’t listen to the naysayers. Proud to be her co-star.
So wild to be sitting here listening to More Perfect on the radio after hearing today’s WNYC layoff news. WNYC was my work home for a decade. The whole thing makes me just…sad.
Richard didn’t miss a beat. I think he even joked about it on air. It was like watching a gymnast land a floor routine. Afterwards, he said that was the beauty of live radio - and reminded me “the audience LOVES that.” When things mess up a little, we all lean in closer.
