The hagiographies of Trump’s foreign policy compelled me to write about the tactics this team has, at times, employed to good effect. Of course, isolated tactics can't make America safer, more secure, & more prosperous when they're unmoored from a coherent strategy. But it’s

If this ceasefire holds — and I hope with every fiber it does — its success can be traced to Israel’s botched attempt to kill Hamas leaders in Qatar last month. Only then did Trump begin to wield real leverage with Bibi, something I wish we’d seen earlier across administrations.

The Pentagon press corps has done an extraordinary job advocating quietly and now publicly for their First Amendment rights, which should be guaranteed, not threatened. Their work has achieved some results, but there's more work to do. I wrote about this stand-off in the NYT

Very strong and important statement from the Pentagon Press Association about how its members may soon lose their credentials. Please read and share. A free press matters.

Bibi never wanted Hamas to say “yes” — and he did everything he could to tank its chances, from changes to the text to incendiary comments in Hebrew. Hamas also didn’t exactly say “yes.” Nevertheless, Trump’s craven desire for a Nobel may, strangely, get us to the right place.

I write in today's @nytimes about DoD's restrictions on what its press can report. Among the many headlines emanating from the Pentagon, this kind of overreach can quietly, but steadily, corrode our democratic norms, compounding over time if left in place.

New in @ForeignAffairs: @JeffreyPrescott & I argue that China is accelerating plans to exploit U.S. retreat under Trump. Xi aims to establish China as the fulcrum of an emerging multipolar world. He's now advancing a new, more active diplomatic strategy. https://t.co/3iTFyRBjEj

You can tell a lot about this administration on the basis of what they're against. In this case, they're targeting a group whose mission is to promote democracy, human rights, the rule of law, & transparency -- entirely through peaceful civic engagement.

The directive suggests department leaders are following orders from the president, a major break from decades of past practice meant to insulate the agency from political interference.

Let's not pretend this is a foreign policy speech or dignify it by calling it one. This is basically MAGA madlibs. Trump is speaking to his political base, hitting each of his campaign trail hits, while addressing a room of leaders who'd rather be just about anywhere else.

The Trump family sold its crypto tokens to entities with connections to North Korea, Iran, & Russia. This is about more than grift & greed. When criminals & rogue regimes can buy access to and influence with the first family, our national security is implicated.

Trump is using his friend Orban to shield him from having to impose sanctions on his friend Putin. And the allegation that NATO has wasted his time is especially rich — his always-extending ultimatums and performative summitry have gone on for 8 months with nothing to show.

For such proposals, mediators rely on two Hamas nodes: the leadership inside Gaza & the external cohort in Qatar & Turkey. It’s no secret the external leadership has consistently been more pragmatic (a relative term) than the military cadre in Gaza. Israel just tried to kill
