It remains to be seen what the Court will do, or how fast it will move. The only thing that seems clear after sitting through today's argument is that the desire to undercut our rights abounds, but our fight continues.

Nevermind the absolute absurdity of the argument that rooting out and remedying discrimination is... somehow... discrimination?? It's a bizarre play on the "I know you are but what am I" taunts of an elementary school playground, laced with a nasty indifference to voters' rights.

The case is very clearly a mess, as the conservative justices grasped to figure out how and why they might be able to undercut Section 2 through a racial gerrymandering challenge. Callais has always been an imperfect vehicle for that apparent intention, but that didn't stop them.

The lawyers attacking the VRA came in the form of a 3-headed Cerberus, lashing in different directions, seemingly undecided as to whether the VRA is unconstitutional, the remedy is flawed, or they just don't like the case law. The middle-three justices were likewise scattered.
