President Trump, "Norway is immensely wealthy because of the North Sea, the same North Sea that you have" Norway nationalised oil and gas, the UK privatised oil and gas Noway used that wealth to create a gigantic sovereign wealth fund, the UK did not UK collected less revenue

"People are really scared of speaking out right now." "I think that's hugely overstated." Gillian Tett, Provost of King's College Cambridge, and Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, Conservative MP from 2010-2024, clash over their views on censorship in the US. #Newsnight

🚨It's 80 years since William Joyce aka Lord Haw-Haw was convicted of treason against Britain. Joyce belittled the UK, promoted a foreign leader and nation as being better than the UKs. Remind you of someone?

Why can't the BBC just be impartial towards President Trump, like GB News, asks Nigel Farage. GB News:

Farage, Johnson, Badenoch et al congratulating themselves on humbling the BBC now have to decide whether to back Trump’s potential $1bn lawsuit. No more Traitors, Strictly, Match of the Day, Graham Norton , Jules Holland etc etc All to pave the way for 24/7 GB news?

"For what it's worth, I think some of Prescott's analysis is itself opinion driven." The BBC is in "big trouble" for a series of "own goals", but Stephen Sackur wonders whether internal reports can be influenced by "strong personal views".

Across the world, the BBC is recognised as the best source of impartial news reporting. It's not perfect, because nothing made by people ever is. However, in these days of deliberate lies, manipulation & populism, it's a beacon of truth. Britain should be proud of it. And we are

Tim Davie's resignation from the BBC is deeply worrying. It raises serious questions about whether bad actors are interfering in the BBC’s independence. The BBC is a cornerstone of British media, we want it to be the best it can be. That’s why we’ve supported the licence fee:

A few reminders of what Trump said in the lead up to Jan 6th December 19th: “Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!” December 26th: “We will never give up. We will never concede.” December 27th: “Just say the election was corrupt and leave the rest to me

Well this has become a deep crisis for the corporation now - but it could also be an opportunity, let’s hope so, because the BBC remains a vital part of national life

The irony meter just broke. The BBC isn't perfect, but it's one of the few things standing between our British values and a Trump-style takeover of our politics.

Tim Davie was one of the best D-Gs the BBC has had, and Deborah Turness was a brilliant head of news. Only the BBC’s enemies could possibly be glad they’ve resigned. We’ve now got a real fight on our hands to defend public service broadcasting, because that’s under threat too.

Where power lies in Britain. Badenoch, Johnson, the Daily Mail wanted DG Tim Davies head as part of their long standing campaign against the BBC. Lisa Nandy’s support was inadequate. Yes the Panorama edit shouldn’t have happened. But this is wildly disproportionate. A bad day.

The corporation should have stood up to the Telegraph, Trump and the Tories. Now, its enemies know how little it takes for it to fold, says Jane Martinson, professor of financial journalism
