Today I asked ChatGPT about the topic I wrote my PhD about. It produced reasonably sounding explanations and reasonably looking citations. So far so good – until I fact-checked the citations. And things got spooky when I asked about a physical phenomenon that doesn’t exist.

Hey all, bad news! Two papers confirming your worst intuitions about leadership: 🗣Babble Hypothesis: Whoever speaks the most is likely to be made leader, regardless of what they say 🤷‍♂️Peter Principle: People are promoted out of roles they are good at & into ones they are bad at!

This, together with @DSMarkovits’ ‘Meritocracy Trap’ needs to become part of our discourse on polarization. ➡️Meritocracy does not automatically provide dignity. Also poses important questions for organizational design and culture!

Harvard’s Michael Sandel contends that Democrats’ focus on creating a meritocratic society has led them to stray from commitments to the common good and the dignity of all work.

No matter how much you know better, social media can still distort your sense of what is true. The Illusory Truth Effect says that repeated statements seem more true than new ones. Even if the statements are a lie. Even if you know they are. But fact checking all new claims helps

(1/8) Reasons you don’t actually disagree with someone. Inspired by many intense debates with someone I feel I often didn’t actually disagree with. You agree on the facts of the situation and weight values the same, but…

Not only are there a bunch of fake Katie Bouman @instagram accounts now, but they’re spreading the lie about her colleague writing most of the code and commenters are just eating it up anyway thinking they’re replying to the real deal. They even made a fake account for the guy.

Great point by @vestager at #sxsw on anti-trust differences between EU and US: Anti-trust policy requires a debate about the good life. A convenient life doesn’t have to be a good life -> anti-trust needs wider angle than consumer harm

This is VERY bad idea. Why should we be forced to submit to facial recognition just to buy groceries? So brands can test if their ad campaigns work? Umm no thanks. This invades your physical privacy and profiles you, for bad data.
