Banned and Restricted Announcement, Jan 2022
In the interests of competitive diversity, the following cards are banned from Standard.
Gandalf the White
Samwise Gamgee’s Backpack
The One Orc Who Says Meat’s Back on the Menu
Additionally, we will be keeping a close eye on Pippin
Positive side effect about “talking about politics” (which is really just acknowledging what’s happening now and has been for generations) is that you get to cull your follower list of people without empathy.
So, how much Time Spiral do we have to buy to get them to switch back to old frames? After seeing them, it’s clear that Magic cards just look better that way.
7-0 for $2000 with the best sealed deck I've ever opened (no exaggeration).
I cast Mascot Exhibition at least once literally every game, and the only limit to how many times I was going to cast it was my opponent conceding.
I voted, and I encourage you to do the same today!
#DenverVotes
(I don’t find political discussion on Twitter to be remotely productive, but I will say that I was happy to cast a vote for Bernie today)
I got a speeding ticket by mail and
@GabySpartz
liked the picture they sent so much she put it on the fridge. I was definitely pleased with myself, that much is obvious.
Can’t say whether it was worth it, because there’s a ton of money involved, but it seems to me that Robinhood just traded their company’s future off in an attempt to save these hedge funds (obviously it’s corrupt as hell, but I’m just looking at the strategy).
As per my newsletter this week, the objective top 5 planeswalkers of all time:
5. Teferi, Time Raveler
4. Narset, Parter of Veils
3. Wrenn and Six
2. Jace, the Mind Sculptor
1. Oko, Thief of Crowns
What should get banned:
Oko
Once Upon a Time (preferably in all formats)
Veil of Summer
What will get banned:
Gilded Goose
Veil of Summer
Nissa
I just hope whatever happens makes Standard sweet 🤞
About to play in what’s likely the last premier Magic event for me for quite some time, and it’s the end of an era. Magic has brought so much into my life, and even if the future as a competitive outlet isn’t clear, it’s still the game I love. I’ll be waiting to see what’s next.
Not sure why, but this season really got to me, culminating in me getting way too invested in the results of this weekend. I really don’t like the state it put me in, so I’m gonna take a breather and focus on the multitude of good things that I’m lucky enough to have going on.
As someone who loves trolling and engages in it frequently, I hate it when people twist the term and use it as an excuse to be vile human beings. Being a bully isn't clever or funny.

On the road to a Pro Tour for the first time in over 4 years. Win or lose, I’ll be writing an old-school tournament report, but it’ll sure be more fun if I do well 😛
I'm *this* close to calling MOM my favorite draft set of all time - it's got incredible range and great gameplay. Well done, everyone who worked on it (and especially credit to
@Grumpherys
for leading like 4 of my top 10 draft sets ever).
I’ve got a big announcement to share today - I’m joining the
@StorybookBrawl
team as the VP of Marketing, and couldn’t be more excited! The game is awesome and I’m really looking forward to working with a fantastic team.
I am impressed that the post-debate commentators on CNN itself called it a dumpster fire and a shitshow (verbatim). It doesn’t actually help, but at least they are able to call it like it is.
Coming into day 2 at 4-4 in the highest stakes tournament I’ve ever played. A good finish may net me a Worlds / MPL slot, and a bad one means I probably miss those and Rivals both. What my next year looks like hinges on today, so now would be a great time to get (really) lucky.
I was late to the party, but
@GabySpartz
finally got me to watch Avatar (the show), and I was blown away by how good it was. Better yet, I learned there was even a movie, which I can’t wait to watch!
I've got a nice Kaldheim preview today (thanks to WotC for that!) - it's a vicious one, and Sagas are the best-designed card type in the past 10 years.
I could scry about my official preview cards being predictable, but honestly I'm just happy that the Temples are back - check out normal and borderless versions here: (as always, thanks to WotC for the preview cards)
Re: MagicFest Online - if your first reaction is “RIP paper magic”, perhaps think about what’s happening in the world? I know that myself and everyone at
@CFBEvents
/
@wizards_magic
can’t wait until it’s safe to run paper events again, but that time is certainly not now.
I do not mean this is as any sort of commentary - when all is said and done, if you got 9th in the Mythic race reach out to me and I’ll send ya something sweet (this isn’t a joke either).
Recounted damage like 4 times, since going for lethal meant not casting Act of Treason on Korvold. Got there, and think I may be in top 8 🏆

We got some sweet Time Spiral Remastered preview cards from Wizards on Constructed Resources this week, and this is the one I'm most excited for - old frame Ponder looks incredible, and I can't wait to get my hands on some.
Tough day for those interested in the competitive / deep strategy side of Magic. SCG has always been a competitor to CFB, but I’m sad to see they felt the need to make this change. Heart goes out to all the folks out of work too - I hope they land well.
I'll be back with a long Cube stream tomorrow, but for now enjoy recently unearthed footage of baby Luis playing Magic in 1994. I'd at least figured out that Lightning Bolt and Llanowar Elves were good!
Capped off the weekend with an awesome birthday dinner (and amazing cake, courtesy of

) thanks to all my friends for being there 🎂
