My @usnews op-ed on UN funding crisis: "How to Save the UN from #Trump; Washington is withholding billions of dollars it owes the UN. Europe must step in & lead." The UN should cut costs, but wealthy democracies can also find ways to pay more. @hrw

The #Trump administration signals deep cuts in refugee admissions & prioritizing remaining places for white South Africans & Europeans who oppose immigration. @hrw's @BillFrelick says this 180° resettlement turn "adds deep insult to even deeper injury." https://t.co/dYo9vCAgBw

When visiting China, Swedish Foreign Minister Malmer Stenergard should focus on 1) human rights and growing Chinese repression including in Xinjiang and 2) Chinese transnational repression, to secure the release of bookseller Gui Minhai. https://t.co/qykaNtbpx5

Morocco's youth have clear-cut demands for better healthcare, education & end to corruption. If the government can fund state-of-the art stadiums, it can afford to fund its healthcare. Calls for reform should not be met with repression, lethal force @hrw

As some question the value of the multilateral system, these Human Rights Council outcomes show that when states & civil society come together they have the power to make a difference https://t.co/ULs55N5qtY

The latest session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which concluded last week, offers a glimmer of hope in what are dark times for human rights around the world.

🚨 It wasn’t exactly a nail-biter. In a non-competitive vote, UN General Assembly elected serial rights abusers #Egypt & #Vietnam to @UN_HRC. Thanks to the lack of a veto, the HRC does some good work. But time to stop handing HRC seats to abusive govts on a silver platter. @hrw

Strong statement from the Pentagon Press Association, noting that most members on Wednesday will have their credentials confiscated by the Pentagon and won’t be given new ones because the reporters can’t and won’t “acknowledge a policy that gags Pentagon employees and threatens

🚨Did you know that Egypt + Vietnam are on track to secure seats on the UN Human Rights Council despite being woefully unfit for membership? The UN General Assembly will 'elect' members to the UN’s premier rights body in a 'noncompetitive vote' on Oct 14 https://t.co/ZS2vN25vTG

👀Putting this right here as @PMEgypt_Geneva #Egypt is a candidate for the @UN_HRC. Non-competitive elections allow abusive governments to join the HRC. On the 10/14 UNGA election, UN members need to think twice before voting for countries that don't deserve to be in the HRC.
Egyptian authorities have detained journalist Ismail Iskandarani over Facebook posts. This is a bellwether moment for the Egyptian government. Egypt should stop unlawfully detaining critics and journalists and release those arbitrarily detained.

While the call for investigations gained momentum after 2021,the demand for accountability goes back further. In 2002 the courageous Asma Jahangir called for a commission of inquiry to look into all perpetrators but the US opposed any such investigations.
