To mark this year’s #WorldDrowningPreventionDay, the #WHO is raising awareness to 6 evidence-based drowning prevention interventions that countries and organizations can use to dramatically reduce the risk of drowning (To be read on the WHO website).

The many boats that needed help at the same time demanded everything from both the Coast Guard crews and us. The evacuations lasted late into the night. The #RiseAbove now has 85 people on board, including women, and several small kids and babies.

In the following 12 hours, we stabilized all boats and distributed life jackets in coordination with the Italian coast guard, which joined us later. Upon request from Rome, we evacuated 2 of the 9 boats and took the people on board.

The crew of the #RISEABOVE has supported several hundred people in distress at sea in another continuous operation off Lampedusa yesterday. After initially only one boat was reported to us, which we reached in the morning, a total of 9 boats appeared over the next few hours.

But it is also very important to us that we have everything on board to give desperate and exhausted people a bit of dignity after their terrible time. Human dignity is inviolable. We take that literally. 📸 Johannes Räbel

The short time in between was used by the crew to maintain and clean the ship, refill food, fresh clothes and blankets, prepare hundreds of hygiene kits, and check and clean all life jackets. Of course, everything must always be technically in order.

After assisting hundreds of people on 7 boats in distress over the weekend and bringing 77 of them safely to the port of Vibo Valentia earlier this week, the #RiseAbove is already on its way back to the SAR zone.
