Finally, PPARγ agonists can restore lipid balance and reduce epithelial apoptosis in colon CD8+ T cells from people with HIV. This opens up new therapeutic possibilities for enhancing gut health in this population.

We also reveal a striking dysregulation in lipid metabolism among colon TRM CD8+ T cells from HIV-positive individuals, revealing a drop in PPARγ that hinders their function and fuels T cell - epithelial contact mediated epithelial cell death.
