It's that time of the year again! I'm a Dalit woman in academia & I am happy to assist other Dalits & Adivasis looking to apply for a PhD or a Masters abroad with their statement of purpose/apps. Pls note that I can't help you find a job/search a program for you. Dm me and/or RT!
Say what you want, but i want the confidence to believe that HARVARD approached ME on email without a PhD to come and be asst. prof like i’m dat 🔥🔥 💯💯💅🏼💅🏼👸🏻👸🏻
I am looking to mentor 1 Dalit/Adivasi student (sorry low bandwidth this year) applying for PhD in information/media, STS,or feminist studies in North America. Pls research on dept+prog+materials+faculty you want to work with before dm’ing me. RT/share in relevant networks pls!
I am humbled & thrilled to share that I will be a President’s Postdoctoral Fellow (
@UC_PPFP
) at the University of California - San Diego’s Communications Dept (
@UCSDComm
) starting this Fall! I will continue building anti-caste feminist approaches to computing w/ new projects! 🧵
Okay forreal tho is Young India Fellowship world’s only fellowship where you have to PAY (instead of getting PAID) to be their fellow? I swear I was caught off guard in 2015 when i made it thinking I’ll get paid and found out lol, nope.
Honestly the thing you will have to learn while on the job market is to brand your research as cooler, bigger and grander instead of it being real, messy, raw, small, precise, powerful - a disorienting process where bragging leaves you feeling inadequate as you perform adequacy.
I am looking for a spare laptop to support a Dalit student pursuing their master's at TISS. I can pay for repairs/shipping if needed. Please circulate widely.
Every day in the US as an immigrant without a permanent status is a reminder of being a second class citizen. I have a job that hired me to do research and I am dying to start work on my book/articles but here I am unable to start work or get paid, spending my days in anxiety.
Grateful and excited to know that our paper “Counting to be Counted” has been awarded a diversity and inclusion award🥇at

i know a lot of prospective students that are not confident abt english, esp. lower caste, can assume that there is no wiggle room in US universities for ielts/toefl/gre stuff. PLS DONT LET THIS STOP YOU. Ask for exemptions and enquire for options if you cant afford/take them!
The idea that tech industry is casteless is one of the most repeated myths that one encounters over and over. Our recent work demonstrates how this is actually not tru anywhr -how Dalit engineers encounter & learn to deal with caste everyday. Read it here-
“…respondents argued that caste discrimination does not exist, that caste is not a thing in the United States, and that efforts to raise awareness of these issues in the United States would sow further division.”
God & my ancestors' graces are smiling upon me - this paper has been awarded best paper at

For some of us a PhD is the only way to gain access to the social and intellectual capital hoarded by upper caste scholars. And did I mention legitimacy? Yes, legitimacy. Means to ends 🤷🏻♀️ (Ofc this is a subtweet)
I am looking for dalit information science/computer science scholars to collaborate with wherever they might be. Please reach out to me if you identify as such and would like to work on something exciting that’s been cooking in my mind!
I am presenting my ongoing work on Dalit feminist ethics of deceit and deception (hint in the pics👇🏽) in the liberal academy that doesn’t account for modes of studying up where the native studies the colonizer. Come attend our panel tmrw at South Asia conf

Hello! I am looking to form a "Dalits in Tech & Society" kind of group where both current and prospective scholars/practitioners/researchers can connect for research support, collaboration, & exchange of ideas/resources. It will be *strictly private & protected* - pls dm &/or RT!
Are you a computing professional from a SC/ST community? I am a Dalit PhD student doing research on caste and computing and I want to hear your story. I will take utmost care to protect your identity as we collaborate on this project. RT and share widely pls!

So excited to see this out finally! I had the honor of contributing to this brilliant syllabus and also being featured on it! A critical resource for researchers, teachers, scholars, activists, policy makers and writers interested in inequity, tech and digitality. 🔥🔥
I just spoke about this at
@rightscon
: Intent is irrelevant to the practice of caste bcoz internalized, naturalised casteism drives everyday decisions & interactions in South Asia. Intention makes it a personal issue, it is a shield against accountability of a caste mind & system
On world environment day, our intent was to spread awareness about the potential of plastic waste and benefits of recycling in a humorous way.
Unintentionally, we may have hurt the sentiments of certain communities and individuals. We have taken down the video.
Insanely proud of
@lapshiii
for giving an excellent dissertation defense talk on the relations of caste and gender in computing -- Congratulations, Doctor!!! 🎉🎓
These last few weeks of PhD I’ve been juggling visa stuff + defending + revising + packing & moving to new city + processing emotions & finances + planning new job. It feels like the final showdown of a reality tv show. It’s like The Survivor but for academics 😬🐣🥵👀🫠☠️👻💩👽
Critical caste consciousness raising is so important for caste-oppressed to turn anger into awareness and action. Else the anger festers and kills slowly.
Writing my end of year PhD progress review like “I guess my biggest accomplishment was that I survived and am still alive. My biggest challenge was finding meaning in doing research and building my career as an academic as the world burns and might not exist tomorrow so....yeah”
Trust indian media-houses to take an issue of ethnic cleansing & gendered religious and caste violence to turn it into a story abt “Indian woman is not safe” deploying (yet again!!) the respectable savarna woman as a decoy to concurrently show concern & delegitimize the struggle
Wow some1 just dragged my university into the debate on why I want to support DBA students applying for higher ed. Things on the trolling end jusssst got wild friends. I am alllllll about this drama because savarna brown people love to talk about race bt nvr abt caste. Bring it.
Stuck in a loop of guilt for finding this heat unbearable - turning on the ac - then proceeding to feel guilty bc ac will only make the city/place/planet hotter - then shutting it off to only feel hotter + guiltier for feeling hot when i know 75% of India can’t afford ac. 😮💨😕😵💫
Late notice but I will be talking today at CHIWORK about my graduate research and my dissertation project with the brilliant

SCs gatekeeping reservations from Dalit Christians and Muslims indicates the deep fissure in the Ambedkarite movement that needs a serious resolution thru engagement w/ non-buddhist forms of emancipation that have ALWAYS existed but dismissed as inferior or misplaced.

Some of us are observing quietly as mostly upper caste women celebrate and get overwhelmed/emotional at today’s verdict in favor of Ramani, calling it a win. Who has won? Who is winning? (1/n)
We’ll be talking about how caste and tech are co-constructing each other with a special focus on ✨Savarnas✨. Thought we’d set the record straight since everyone is so obsessed with talking about Dalits. Tune in!!

Does caste affect who you choose to network with online? Our research of LokSabha Twitter networks shows that upper-caste MPs overwhelmingly choose to network within themselves, actively pushing out lower caste MPs to the margins. (

Why is someone absolutely irrelevant to this debate being given this platform? The reason SVs get away with appropriation & exploitation is bc their irrelevant & rubbish opinion about things that they have no right to speak or have an opinion about gets traction
@IndianExpress
Anurag Kashyap, an upper caste man, is now comparing Yashica to Kangana Ranaut, someone who was suspended from Twitter for genocidal speech.
Shame on everyone enabling this.
Reading the updates on the bills passed in the RS in the monsoon session, where all but ONE were passed without significant debate, is a fever dream of powerlessness in a broken democracy. I don’t know what we can do as citizens to turn the tide really. :/

The AI frenzy in Indian universities tryna adapt existing courses to AI/data & society courses is looking like the Emperor's New Clothes story as the social sciences and humanities (critical to humanistic analysis of AI) are dismantled, underfunded, underappreciated and red-taped

The thing about applying to grants continuously throughout your graduate career to sustain yourself during the summer or to be able to do your project at all is that it barely gives you any time to write any other kind of research paper or article. So yeah fuck me.

The diff is not ironic, it is parasitic. This is a win for some, not for us all. Stay grounded, hv some perspective. Don’t get delirious at the state protecting the honor of those it sees as valuable. Remember that some of us still out here & we’re still waiting for justice.(n/n)
I can affirm that in communities of techies in India that i m part of there is no holding the gov accountable becoz of the apolitics of sab changa si + to each their own, and that the answer to a crisis of technosolutionism is, you guessed it, more tech solutions 👌✨👩🏻💻

People clarifying hindutva as different from hinduism and coming to defend hinduism as a non-violent religion should read Ambedkar’s poignant argument about how Hinduism is based on violence of the caste system. All of it is flawed fam. It’s alright tho coz that’s all religions.
This is the true face of corporations and the consolidation of the powers of the global elite. Young scholars ready to defend the right of a people TO LIVE are being targeted for their humanity when utter lack of humanity continues to draw and drive money and power in the US.

That means millions of Indians have been overpaying for electricity.
In my first year of grad school a conversation with a colleague led to the realization that a lot of us got disillusioned by the world and decided to do a whole ass degree just to be able to process that trauma in reading, thinking and writing. I think about that a lot.
Yes we have convinced the courts to not get swayed by powerful men’s tactics to delegitimize truth of sexual assault. At the same time, some of us aren’t even believed when we are assaulted, or even kept alive. We’re ridiculed for speakin up on for others who are abused. (2/n)
Wanted to sleep but your girl is back to trash white academics who write books about state categorization and caste from an ambivalent position of ‘analysis’ and perpetuate the ridiculous myth of colonial origins of census in India to reinforce UC innocence. Just go home Susan.

Aspiring PhD students in awe and amazement of the moral high ground seen in scholarly writing and who want to go to grad school thinking academia will be far from tyranny/disappointment of neoliberal & capitalist/exploitative ethos of the world, boy do I have bad news for you.
