Any policy that amounts to a bet against teenagers' creativity in circumventing restrictions imposed by grownups has two potential endstates: A: lost bet becomes a laughing-stock B: incipient police-state to enforce said restrictions We can only hope that this ends up in group A
This is a bit quicker than I'd expected. More platforms are getting told to self-assess against the Australian rules banning under-16s from having social media accounts. Because kids are finding new places to go. https://t.co/XHoJQDlD9y

@lachlanp_ Stand? Like all the councillors stand? Definitely not. Wayne might do it as a joke to punk us but heβs not a king no. I wouldnβt stand. Sorry thatβs odd tbh.

Andrew Little appears to have brought back the dated tradition of Councillors standing for the Mayor as he enters the Council chamber. Not something Tory did. Weird decision to make!

I hate how no one cares about other animals that aren't cat or dogs getting abused because this is animal abuse. What even was the point in doing this to the fish in the first place??? Leave the poor fish alone you guys aren't funny in the slightest

Nothing highlights our insular NZers are more than idiotic takes about using public transport to buy furniture. It's pretty normal (even in the US) to order furniture for delivery, rather than driving off with it. The idea NZers are well-travelled and metropolitan is a myth.
people with the most annoying transport opinions in this city all simultaneously having this original hot take about IKEA and trains

Interesting break with the Labour Party line on the Mt Vic Tunnel. Must be running against Julie Anne Genter or something.
NZTA put out a very redacted report on the proposed changes to SH1. What it shows is that the likely cost of the package will be borne by Wellingtonians, regardless of whether they use the roads. Wellington does need new infrastructure, but it also needs a fair deal. Aπ§΅

I have argued that any age-gating of social media has to pick at least one of these three options, and likely gets a mix of all three: 1) Easily worked-around by kids; 2) Cumbersome for adults proving they're not kids; 3) The end of privacy and anonymity.
BREAKING: The European Parliament just voted in favor of banning social media for people under the age of 16. 483 MEPs voted in favor while 92 voted against. If it becomes law, people will likely have to use IDs to log into their profiles, making anonymous accounts impossible.

Ferris is right on the maths but appears to have done no serious political analysis of second-order consequences. But in any case, TPM and its factional derivatives don't need Labour collusion to make this happen. They just need to win those electorates without much party vote.
