This by @andrewmichta is very good. Until 1989 at least, the U.S. did understand. Today only those European countries bordering Russia and which have felt the brunt of its lies and its invasions, get it. As does Michta.

In 2025, Russia has been framing the EU and Ukrainian leadership as "warmongers", who don't want to stop the war in Ukraine. This, of course, is an outright lie. In reality, it's the Kremlin who has rejected at least seven peace proposals in 2025 alone. Don't be deceived.

Putin's argument here is absurd. But note that he did NOT say this war began because of imminent NATO plans to enlarge in 2022. Putin was threatened by Ukraine's Revolution of Dignity in 2014 -- i.e. democratic expansion, not NATO expansion. He states it here very clearly:
