Sixteen years ago this week, Mississippi State was preparing to open the season with a trip to play the Oregon Ducks. Oregon was coming off a top-5 finish and had just expanded their stadium. We were trying to bounce back from a 3-8 season.

Growing up in Texas, I knew next to nothing about Mississippi State sports. But when I signed scholarship papers to MSU in February of 2001, I signed up as a State fan for life. It ain't always easy, but it sure is great to be a Bulldog!

When I was at State, we had a sports psychologist who would take us through a meditative exercise after the pregame meal. They would turn off the lights, you'd close your eyes, focus on your breathing, etc. It was an excellent way to get relaxed and centered before losing to UAB.

Only a few minutes before we left the locker room, we were told we would take part in holding the flag. It was absolutely surreal, total silence in the stadium. Just a football game, but in that moment it felt like we were part of something very important.
I sat in the stands at 16 years old for this game and can vividly remember the goosebumps in pregame. Was a special, special night. Maybe college football can make us feel normal yet again here soon like it did on this night in Starkville 19 years ago.
