Finally out! 🚀 Check out our open-access review on how generative AI can both exacerbate and ameliorate socioeconomic inequalities in information, work, education, and healthcare. We also discuss policies that could help reduce these inequalities while mitigating harmful

We used our new capabilities index, the ECI, to measure the gap between open- and closed-weight models. The result? This gap is smaller than previously estimated. On average, it takes 3.5 months for an open-weight model to catch up with closed-source SOTA.

Fei-Fei Li (@drfeifei) on limitations of LLMs. "There's no language out there in nature. You don't go out in nature and there's words written in the sky for you.. There is a 3D world that follows laws of physics." Language is purely generated signal. https://t.co/FOomRpGTad

Columbia CS Prof explains why LLMs can’t generate new scientific ideas. Bcz LLMs learn a structured “map”, Bayesian manifold, of known data and work well within it, but fail outside it. But true discovery means creating new maps, which LLMs cannot do. https://t.co/PzI0YrTlpl

Andrej Karpathy calls AI Agents slop "Overall, the models they are not there. And I feel like the industry [...] it's making too big of a jump and it's trying to pretend that this is amazing. And it's not—it's slop! And I think they are not coming to terms with it. And maybe

The most interesting part for me is where @karpathy describes why LLMs aren't able to learn like humans. As you would expect, he comes up with a wonderfully evocative phrase to describe RL: “sucking supervision bits through a straw.” A single end reward gets broadcast across

The deeper you go into the semiconductor supply chain, the less believable it becomes. > TSMC, a company on a small island, produces over 90% of the world’s most advanced chips > TSMC relies on dutch company ASML for EUV lithography machines > ASML depends on German Company

China’s population pyramid is dire. • The last large cohort of women, those aged 34 to 39, is rapidly moving into the non-reproductive age range. • There is an extreme surplus of males. More than 30 million. These are men who cannot possibly find a wife, an enormous

Yet another manifestation of the basic problem that I have been emphasizing since 1998: pure neural networks cannot reliably generalize beyond the training distribution.

🚨 BAD news for Medical AI models. MASSIVE revelations from this @Microsoft paper. 🤯 Current medical AI models may look good on standard medical benchmarks but those scores do not mean the models can handle real medical reasoning. The key point is that many models pass tests
