3/ spend needs to be *managed*. what happens when pricing gets fundamentally less predictable? you need better visibility, better alerting, more auditability, and this is where Cursor is promising investment. This sort of entitlement-gating is a huge part of what we work on.

2/ product & architecture innovation *can* change cost equations. Just like @vercel can afford to pass on the savings of fluid compute's architecture, for Cursor there's some real magic baked into 'Auto automatically routes to different frontier models'. Hence, use of Auto is.

To understand the Cursor change, let's go back to the obvious principles:. 1/ at *scale*, you cannot escape marginal costs. Cursor isn't trying to hide the fact that they're paying frontier models per token. Sure, they may have some negotiated rates but they need to passthrough.

one of the central tensions in navigating pricing - especially for (pro) consumer products is that there's a bias towards simplicity - $20/mo sounds plain and simple. but product cost equations are just more complicated: the fastest growing companies are those like @Replit, not.

first and foremost: grace where it's due. pricing is really hard (ref @dok2001 here: because it involves understanding:.(a) the value your product delivers.(b) the behaviors you want to incentivize, by audience.(c) your cost & margin profile. all across.
