And we can reflect on which scifi stories or tropes chat bots most resemble. It's definitely not StarTrek's Data or Starfleet's ship computers. For my money it's more like virtual reality in the Red Dwarf books.

These are _choices_ that OpenAI, Anthropic et al have made. There's no reason these technologies _have to_ work like this. Even Grok here is at least mildly more social in terms of how people interact with it.

I am much more vehement about this. I think that OpenAI's product choices are deeply deeply antisocial and inhumane. The way that they've implemented chat bots are isolating, sycophantic and have no reality in your relationships with others save for how you represent them.
i have a theory that those more susceptible to relationships with chatbots do not have groupchats in their lives the groupchat is, imo, an indispensable part of modern life in a world where we commune IRL less one needs a place to BS and get checked by friends on dumb stuff

The ATProto dev community is on the cusp of some amazing new things. Dan Abramov imploded his account here, but he just published a deep dive into the promise of ATProto:

This incredible incompetence of the FBI under Kash Patel seems like a huge story.
Crazy that this guy was literally talking about his plans to shoot up this church for a month on the open internet, but @FBIDirectorKash and @PamBondi are too busy going after imaginary MS-13 Home Depot workers, if only they were doing their jobs instead. :(

Everyone from @tylercowen to @benthompson has been impressed with @danwwang’s new book on China, Breakneck. But not enough startup founders and tech execs are paying attention to the insights he’s writing about. So I’m hosting a virtual chat next Friday 8/22...

This is cool. @germnetwork built an MLS based End to End Encrypted messenger, and because #atproto is open, they can build an integration to connect ATProto users directly to their E2EE protected Germ messenging.

tfw you can't tell if your head of product is saying "building the Antichrist (derogatory)" or "building the Antichrist (complimentary)"
Going from an office where AI researchers are building the Antichrist to my living room where my girlfriend is watching Love Island is one of the most drastic transitions in the known universe

Update: @cluely filed a DMCA takedown for my tweet about their system prompt, alleging that it contained "proprietary source code" Making legal threats against security researchers is not a good look, and I encourage Cluely to reflect on this and open doors to researchers. 🧵
I reverse engineered @cluely – and their desktop source code exposes their entire system prompts and models used. What's inside? 🧵

A rural physician I spoke with hadn't even heard misoprostol was being reclassified. "What? That's death!" she said when I told her about the cart removal. She said pharmacies have already been "pushing back" when she prescribed the medication for miscarriages

50 doctors signed a letter to the Louisiana Department of Health and Surgeon General Ralph Abraham asking for additional guidance, specifically “how to ensure [misoprostol] will be readily and quickly available in commonly used obstetric hemorrhage carts.”
