Discovered today the best way to preserve the color of a CRT photograph. This is critical for preserving 9300K color temperature for photos of Japanese games before PS3. Don't white balance the CRT. White balance the room. Here I used a daylight setting on room lights...

$750 is 25% of the street price of a Sony PVM 20L5 and that's before me or Steve has to restore it. It's also double the size as a 4:3 display on a 55" widescreen TV. It's also way more flexible in terms of valid signals than a 20L5. It's not cheap, but it's also not cheap 😅…

Found a good way to illustrate the difference in real world output of Genesis and SNES vs the 1:1 and 4:3 outputs of emulators, which are both incorrect. 4:3 is close, but stretches SNES too much while not compressing Genesis enough... sort of equally wrong.

@MGSMGN To be clear, the PS2 doesn't upscale anything. The 512 horizontal resolution is passed through a dot clock, not unlike the SNES 256 mode... it seems to be the same relationship too... 8:7 So MGS2 512 would appear to be an equivalent width of 585, but it's the same 512 dots

Another big revelation in the quest to visualize the proper amount of overscan for a given CRT. The equal percentage viewable area patterns many high-end monitors produce don't mark out a 4:3 area. That's obvious once the math sinks in, so I did a ton of photography...

I also have independent verification of Genesis 256 and 320 @240pTest Monoscope against a Leader Model 408 NTSC Pattern Generator and a JVC monitor.

Your mileage will vary based on your own CRT... but this technique should deliver a photograph that's extremely similar to what you actually see color wise with your own eyes.

@Cynder666 @DestinyBulletn I'd love to see the "revenue target ÷ active player count = what Destiny should actually cost" numbers. Because something doesn't jive with reality.

These were a quick test with just my Samsung Galaxy S21 manual mode, RAW format, and Lightroom Mobile. I'll attempt something more detailed later.

There are plenty of reasons to own a Wii... but Muramasa The Demon Blade and Sin & Punishment Star Successor are reasons you can't go without a Wii. I just got Sin & Punishment again and it's glorious. As perfect and holy as I remember and more. Playing Wii on a CRT is sublime.

@240pTest @FBXGargoyle @usa_retro @Artemio What really opened my eyes was what Title Safe Area really meant and how much was really up for grabs in terms of overscan. You can use this to always get the right aspect ratio, and still overscan or underscan an amount that's right for your setup.
