@eugenejohnson_ I’m pursuing my PhD in Clinical Psychology at Florida State. I do work on the etiology of drug addiction primarily using EEG/ERPs, and a bit of an interest in behavioral genetics. Always happy to collaborate!.

@aaronjfisher @michaelharriot When you hear that kind of cheering when you’re in the lead it is the worst feeling knowing what’s about to happen to you and there’s nothing you can do about it 😂.

So excited to have @mmartinlopez2 and twitterless Leighann Ashlock joining my lab in the fall! 🎊 and they’re already rocking the lab merch, embracing the C.R.E.A.M. Lab style!
It has been a long (longgg) journey and an extremely difficult decision in the end, but I’m excited to announce I will be joining @keanan_joyner at @BerkeleyPsych to finally begin my PhD! Eternally grateful for my support network and all my mentors along the way.

Was putting finishing touches on a paper with @Neooology and @JgmurphyJim this morning, and was thinking about how low-stress + enjoyable it’s been pulling together a paper under a tight timeline with them. Turns out, academia is just like way better if you work with nice people.

There are definite pros to doing a postdoc (and relatedly, a clinical internship), but this👇🏽 hugely factored into my decision to skip it. Quite literally, it was a $200,000 difference in total salary to stay in grad school + clinical internship vs go straight to faculty for me.
Why I didn’t do a post-doc (and why you should think about it, too). You have to figure if it’s really worth the sacrifice for you, and also make sure you know all other options, based on your field.

Instead of excluding participants with hairstyles that preclude electrodes being placed, you can schedule them on days they plan to take hair down and they are often happy to schedule on those days if you just train your RAs to be sensitive and ask about this ahead of time!.
Kudos from this EEGer. I recently had a pt who had a new glued-in weave. I felt bad that the electrodes could not be placed and offered her to reschedule. She decided to stay and took her weave out. However, I've had other #epilepsy pts defer EEG because of hair. #neurotwitter.

This is unequivocally the right thing to do, and I will absolutely die on this hill. The fact that ANY children have a lunch “debt” is horrifying. I hope every state follows California’s lead here!.
California will permanently begin providing free school meals for all public school students this fall, regardless of their family's income.

#BeingAPsychologistWhileBlack means being expected to be an expert on minority health disparities even if it isn’t your research area, then deciding you’ll gain that expertise on top of your other research lines anyway because no one else will do the hard work that’s needed.

Y’all I am legit tripping over this, I never stopped to think about it in these terms. What happens during your PhD is so important, it’s such a big chunk of your life. We’ve got to build a system where people thrive, not just get by.
It just hit me that, by the end this year, I will have spent damn near a quarter of my life in a PhD program and I tell you I did not breathe for at least 20 seconds.

1. Give me a break. But 2. If you can’t tell the difference in weight distribution, grip, and feel of a gun in your hand vs a taser, you aren’t qualified to be using a gun. And any dept giving someone that unqualified a gun should be held liable for public endangerment. Period.
Brooklyn Center Police Chief says the officer drew her gun instead of the taser. He says the officer meant to deploy her taser. Calls it an accidental discharge.

There are _many_ reasons to support cannabis legalization, but its therapeutic effects on anxiety, PTSD, sleep, etc., are not on the list.
First randomised place-controlled trial of cannabis for PTSD. One THC, one CBD, one THC + CBD variety of cannabis compared to placebo. None of the cannabis varieties improved symptom compared to placebo.

My only wish is that we would stop scanning people who use drugs and people who don’t and concluding differences in structure or function is caused by drug use. *~sighs in dispositional liabilities research~*.
First, this study looked at relationships between variables. That is, certain patterns of brain characteristics were related to higher levels of alcohol use that people reported. There is no way of telling whether the brain differences came before or after the alcohol use.

This. Of course the GRE is ‘biased’ towards wealthier, white students, but that’s not the point. The important question is whether it is *more* biased than the other pieces of a grad school application. I think it is nowhere close.
@more_coral Without the GRE, programs rely even more on things like (unpaid) research experience or institution prestige. The GRE is among the only indicators that doesn’t rely on students having the resources to work for free.

Bookmark this thread for the next time someone tells you twitter is a waste of time. Several profs sharing details of the weird academic system we all exist in on a public forum, actively reducing gatekeeping for those who may or may not have access to this info otherwise.
@ashleylwatts @keanan_joyner @ianagutierrez @rachel__walsh @kph3k @BrownClinPsych I don’t know if that’s true, although I can see why it feels that way. I got tenure without PI grant. I mention bc sr faculty in dept were worked up about it, mostly bc they were worried how I’d fare at college and university level evals. So there’s a weird trickle down.

All I’m saying is when I was waiting for my R36 score and I tweeted about it, @saraannhart told me her score once appeared between refreshes of the page, so then I started doing it…and mine did on one of the refreshes too. It’s a causal relationship, no further research needed.
Did you know that there are people who do NOT check for scores on eRA commons the day of their grant review? They wait for the email. They just wait. 🤯.

As a result, I will be forgoing clinical internship and license eligibility. This was a difficult decision to make, but @rewjoyner and I decided that it was what was right for us! I would be happy to talk about the pros/cons with anyone considering this path.

I teared up. The things his mother has seen, and to see her son become a senator. Wow.
Warnock delivering remarks virtually: "The other day, because this is America, the 82 year old hands that used to pick somebody else's cotton went to the polls and picked her youngest son to be a United States senator.".
