🤰🏼—>🤱🏼 Being a pregnant surgery resident had its ups and downs-I loved having a lil buddy with me in the OR, but the schedule and lifestyle was no joke. Thankfully,@UMichCTSurgery @UMichSurgery has policies in place to protect pregnant residents to facilitate a healthy pregnancy

No pregnant woman should have to choose between a paycheck and a checkup. On January 1, New York will become the first state in the nation to give pregnant women paid time off for prenatal appointments.

This professorship speaks to the sponsorship of women, and the commitment to gender equity at Michigan. This highlights an actionable way to promote women cardiac surgeons and narrow longstanding gender gaps. @WomenInThoracic @JoChikweMD @FiedlerAmy @JennaRomanoMD @maraantonoff

Most viewed from @JAMASurgery: Although it is known that female pts die more often than male patients after high-risk surgery, is this because female pts have more complications or because clinicians fail to rescue female pts from those complications? https://t.co/N67rL9BXmr

1/ This week in @JAMASurgery work by Dr. @katiewagnerMD w/@kejoynt identify underlying mechanisms for sex-disparities after surgery: "male & female patients experience ~% of complications, but female patients with complications were more likely to die" https://t.co/OpA0o4RWkl

Important study led by @katiewagnerMD in @JAMASurgery shows that clinicians fail to rescue female patients with complications after high-risk surgery more often than male patients. The good news is that our health systems can improve this phenomenon - but we have to act!

So excited to share our work failure to rescue females after high risk surgery-where despite similar rates and types of postoperative complications, female patients were much more likely to die from these complications-a term called failure to rescue. https://t.co/COveksrhUX

Males and females experience similar rates of complications after high-risk surgery, but complications in females were more likely to result in death. Improving recognition and response could narrow sex disparities. https://t.co/u6ryRQeRGh

Opportunities to narrow the gap: 🚨 1. Adopt sex based disparities as a quality measure 2. Improve medical education for sex specific disease presentations 3. Increase research in female patients to better understand how biological differences can driving outcomes disparities

Despite having no greater chance of developing problems after high-risk cardiovascular surgery, women are more likely than men to die from postoperative complications, a national @umichmedicine-led study in @JAMASurgery suggests. https://t.co/TDwg8cUelz

Did an extremely risky “hail Mary” operation on a cancer patient, after he was declined by multiple other centers. Please read this heartfelt letter from his wife. Sorry to humble-brag, but if you’re a trainee, or anyone struggling to remember your “why”… THIS. IS. WHY. ❤️

Congrats to @FPaganiMD on receiving the Coeur D’Or (💛of Gold) award from the @MichiganAHA! Dr. Pagani has served Michigan communities for his entire career. He was one of the first surgeons in the U.S. to begin implanting LVADs & has led numerous trials to improve the therapy.
