Could you imagine just going to sentencing and being like, “well your honor, do what you must, I have nothing to present.” I vet letters for certain issues but I still use them for even the most serious offenses. Some of this outrage from progressives needs some reflection.
as a PD, i frequently ask for letters or someone to speak at sentencing to show my client is more than the crime he/she is found guilty of committing. they're not in defense of anyone nor do they discredit anyone; their purpose is to seek leniency from the judge in sentencing.

This is FALSE information. Superior Court judges are employees of the Arizona Judicial Branch, NOT the Maricopa County Superior Court. The Arizona Judicial Branch is overseen by the Arizona Supreme Court both of which derive their funding from STATE statute/budget.
Part of the problem is the Maricopa County Supervisors control the budget for the Maricopa County Superior Court judges. You see the conflict of interest? Why would a judge dare to rule against the interests of the supervisors? Been there, done it in 2010, believe me....
