Product Person. Purveyor of strong opinions. Iβve taken some products from nothing to something and others from something to something better.

I remember drawing down a $2.5M credit line from SVB the day Lehman fell in 2008. A week later, with the market & the global economy spiraling out of control, SVBs then CEO Ken Wilcox met with me and a few other startup CEOs to reassure us the bank was there for us. This is sad.
The problem Silicon Valley Bank faces today is VERY different than the 2007-2009 banking crisis. $SIVB was thriving. Credit losses are fairly low. Its deposits TRIPLED from 2019 to β21. Howβs that a problem? . It sounds great, right?. Well, itβs a Wonderful Lifeβ¦. π§΅π

After 25 years of building technology products & companies, I'm now taking a crack at applying my experience alongside one of my favorite VCs. I sat down with the @Felicis team to talk about what drove this decision & what excites me about joining them:

Great advice. The origin story of your product and company may be of interest to investors, but users and customers want to know what your product will do for them.
Most important element when it comes to messaging and brand:. Do not tell the story of your product. Tell the story of your customers. Deliveroo does not sell food. It sells families not shopping and cooking but building connections over food, with time. π₯π.

This is also the reason why many people, including myself, are so skeptical of this "X App" business that Musk keeps talking about. Product bundling aims for a Reese's Peanut Butter cup but often produces something more like a bar of chocolate jammed into a jar of peanut butter.
A major challenge is bundling services into one billing package with discounts is def better for the consumer, but doesn't solve the UX nightmare of toggling between apps. Cable bundle integrated multiple "services" at a discount AND all content was accessible in one place.

Congratulations @GoogleWorkspace team on landing this incredibly important customer. It took years to get to this. Tackling technical and operational challenges on the way to IL4 compliance and more. Onward!.

Also worth noting how neither of my two former employers would have come even close to that purchase price despite the fact that it arguably represents the clearest path to growth for both of them. Well played @scottbelsky.

This one goes out to my two children who literally use this unnecessary embellishment in every statement they make.
ONE OF THE DEFINITIONS OF 'LITERALLY' IS "IN EFFECT, VIRTUALLYβUSED IN AN EXAGGERATED WAY TO EMPHASIZE A STATEMENT OR DESCRIPTION." SOME PEOPLE GET MAD IF YOU USE IT THIS WAY BECAUSE IT ISN'T THE WORD'S PRIMARY MEANING, BUT THIS SENSE OF 'LITERALLY' HAS BEEN USED FOR 250 YEARS SO
