I shall now therefore humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will not be liable to the least objection. https://t.co/NuC25VaSff

Channeling a Tyler Cowen podcast, I think as highly rated as this essay is, it's probably still underrated

The question for every marketplace, just like the question no one really asks for Google search, is whether there is "overspend" now in the advertising monetization model. In a perfectly efficient transaction auction model I describe, overspend will go away because math is clear.

I think there is possibly an interesting answer for scaled 3P marketplaces. Today, suppliers in marketplaces buy ads in order to be the chosen seller. Tomorrow, when a 3P marketplace engages with a buying agent/LLM, it may instead force an auction to be the seller to the agent.

This is a much longer topic, but taken to an extreme, an intelligent personalized agent effectively minimizes search costs and renders much of supply aggregation and onsite advertising useless. On a long enough timeline, everyone sells ads, but what if there's no one to sell to?

There are actually two different concerns for Amazon and all the ecomm sites with ChatGPT becoming the dominant top of funnel: The first is articulated above - is ChatGPT able to force an auction for the right to fulfill consumer demand. The second is what happens to the ad biz.

Ben Thompson writing on WMT/OAI: "That naturally leads to the most interesting question this news raises: what about Amazon" He concludes AMZN should participate in ChatGPT even if OAI is able to make them bid to win. I'm reminded of scene when AMZN tried to turn off Google ads.

I'd argue 5 or 6 of the 9 policy suggestions here are standard recommendations from a certain set of economists that are independent of AI (VAT reform, corporate tax reform, permitting, etc). Nationalizing the labs is def outside the box thinking. https://t.co/MaAqZxF8WU

“Document the scenes of horror, now, and broadcast them on TV channels to the whole world,” a commander from Gaza City called Abu al-Baraa told operatives in the area of Kibbutz Sa’ad. “Slaughter them. End the children of Israel.”
