I’m super pleased to announce that Heavy Table is staging a comeback after a couple years on the bench. We’ve got some of the old team rejoining us and some new faces as well - more on that in the weeks to come!

After many years spent on this wonderful hellsite, I am finally (and with regret) going to decamp for Bluesky. The change to blocks was the last straw. So long, and thanks for all the fish!

People are asking me how they can help Western NC right now. Donate to Mountain Xpress or Asheville Watchdog or The Assembly. But more importantly, pay for your local news wherever you live. Journalism will only survive if you support it.

One of the sharpest, most insightful bits of writing about television that I've read in a long while.
I wrote about TV's Miami Vice, which debuted 40 years ago this month, and interviewed most of the principal architects of its medium-altering pilot episode, including Michael Mann and Jan Hammer. "In the Air Tonight" is discussed.

Also, please allow me to express the following opinion about AI generating your local apple orchard photos instead of just sending a photographer out to get an actual shot: It sucks ass.

Folks: Is this photo AI-generated? Because between the weird hoops on the barrels, the apple balancing act atop the barrels, and the ladder/leaf-play, I'm thinking yes.

A friend of mine asked ChatGPT how much chicken to prepare for a gathering of 15 people (several of whom were kids) and it recommended 10 pounds of chicken. It was too much chicken. The demand for AI that does human work measurably worse than humans is totally bizarre to me.

A key point missing in a lot of post debate analysis is that Trump’s claim about immigrants eating pets almost perfectly syncs up to the piano in the Peanuts theme song.

Chef Peter Thillen at Sanjusan is doing two seatings each Monday of a special 5-course menu, an excellent experience and a good value at $95/person. The menu changes, but this week's may give some sense. (Not listed on it: 3 really good appetizers.) https://t.co/mFfQsZrYkc

Elvis Costello “Pump It Up” This Year’s Model Radar Records (1978) Director: Paul Flattery One of my first favorite songs as a kid. Didn’t bother to learn the actual words until my mid-20s. Life is wild, man. https://t.co/n8E0Cb1j5D

Listening to The Replacements while editing Minnesota State Fair content and reading about Tim Walz at the DNC. Never felt more firmly situated in my geography. Feels bizarrely great.
