i guess it's a blessing that this stuff didn't blow up in a bigger way because when i listen to it now i still remember real people, real places, real things that happened. not scenes from movies or being on the internet

if you ask me, this absolutely shames anything the arcade fire or any other big crossover indie band from the late aughts/early 2010s made. i would put it up against "here comes a regular" or "thirteen" without hesitation

songs are alive, they are lent vitality by circumstance and sapped of their power by overexposure and shifts in consciousness. at this particular moment in time? song-wise it's "the gambler" by kenny rogers. if we're talking recordings, "i know you, i live you" by chaka khan.

Okay enough with the pessimism. What’s the BEST song of all time?.

there was so much of this stuff going on in america during the aughts. tons of different cities all had their own version of it, but none of it really broke through nationally so our collective memory of it is out of proportion with how ubiquitous it actually was.

Edwarde Sharpe’s “Home” is what happens when we let guys like this (the same guy) stop doing cocaine, which is maybe the best argument i could make for a drug i dont even like

but also we wouldn't be talking about any of this stuff with such urgency if the big story in new music right now wasn't the fact that it has slowed down a ton after last year's peak.

people roasting edward sharpe on here kind of serve the same function that radio DJs from local markets with distinct regional music cultures would have served in an older paradigm by pushing back against corporate, top-down national pushes for certain sounds or artists.

obviously radio is still centralized and dominated by shitty top-down curation, but FYP curation now acts as a counterweight against older, more consolidated media ecosystems.

stomp clap was radio music from the era of highly centralized, top-down curation where a few companies run by cultural conservatives owned all the stations. couldn't have happened otherwise. a more decentralized media ecosystem would have pushed back or outcompeted it.

not ready for prime time. the footage in the ad on their site of users conspiratorially whispering insecurities to the pendant looks pathetic, not aspirational at all. it's like they saw the "fucking the text man for texts" tweet and wondered if people would pay for texts instead.

Only used my "Friend" for a couple hours, but a few observations:. - clearly *feels* different (especially from chatgpt voice) to talk to a thing you're wearing and must touch to get a response from. - voice in / text out is interesting and makes sense, although I don't love

maybe the problem is not the existence or availability of the metrics themselves. maybe people just don't like the story they are telling and preferred ambiguity, which allowed them to substitute their own imaginary lore for reality.

was soundscan doing some kind of valuable service to the arts by locking sales figures behind a five-figure annual subscription fee? are people not nostalgic for the TRL era, which was literally a televised metrics competition?.

maybe the point was always to use art as a way to connect with others more than it was to investigate the aesthetic possibilities of the medium itself or whatever and public metrics just made it easier for most people to get what they actually wanted out of this all along.

From music to fashion (all kind of arts) people weirdly care that much about sales as if to justify why *this person* is a better artist or why *this designer* is better than another and.

weird. the song is "park" by tyler hubbard, which was released and originally sent to radio over a year ago? it only debuted at 82 and the charts have slowed down a lot since last year, so this kind of thing was probably flying under the radar in previous years.

I don’t understand why white trash has had such a resurgence in the US lately. so many popular songs and so many popular shows & movies and commercials glorifying white trash, and most of it is just boring and bad.
