On self-driving cars: "In medicine, when a treatment shows this level of benefit, we stop the trial early. Continuing to give patients the placebo becomes unethical. When an intervention works this clearly, you change what you do. In driving, we’re all the control group."
I have a guest essay in @nytimes today about autonomous vehicle safety. I wrote it because I’m tired of seeing children die. Done right, we can eliminate car crashes as a leading cause of death in the United States @Waymo recently released data covering nearly 100 million

What possible justification can there be for charging graduates earning over £50k 6.2% interest, while their peers earning less are only charged 3.2% (and the BoE base rate is 4%) This feels like the kind of thing Wonga would do, not the British state

Exhibit 1004 on why Britain isn’t building: ‘Islington Council spent £497,000 on consultations, project managers, and planning surveys over a period of more than eight years, before deciding to scrap the project altogether.’ @yimbyalliance

It is the effective policy goal of successive governments that this man standing in a shop doing absolutely nothing must be paid nearly the same as a middle income graduate worker with far greater responsibilities. Our minimum wage policy is a joke. Pay differentials matter.
A teacher in 2008 started on £20,627. This was ~85% higher than minimum wage. Today, they start on £32,916. Which is only 33% higher than minimum wage. This doesn't even account for student loans or pension contributions. The gap is closing and closing fast!

This FT graph showing the student loans threshold and the minimum wage converging is quite the thing.

Do politicians not understand that this kind of ‘politician speak’ is why the public dispose them? Just have an honest, normal conversation without parroting the talking points your SPADs handed you that morning. Be human.
This is a devastating interview for Keir Starmer. He's visibly rattled, thin-skinned, and clearly has a temper. His lies are falling apart. The man is utterly unfit to be prime minister. Absolute car crash.

The American man next to me on the @EurostarUK to Paris just asked where the seatbelts were. High speed trains are an alien technology to your average American. 🤣

This is it. The freeze disproportionately hits the highest earning 20%. Doesn’t really touch the top 1%. We’ve accidentally created a unique kind of progressive taxation aimed at those earning about £50k to 150k
One interesting thing to note on the 3-year freeze in personal tax allowances: a 1p increase in all rates of income tax would have raised a similar amount while bringing in more from those at the very top of the distribution.

*Sound of landlords writing letters stating a 5% rent increase as of 1st January 2026*. Like seriously, do politicians not understand second and third order effects?
Reeves has come for landlords. She is increasing the basic and higher rate of tax on property income by 2 percentage points. She says it's not fair that tenants pay more tax than landlords.

TIL That some housebuilders will only install enough solar to tick the regulatory box and nothing more. That's why these roofs have 5, rather then 6 panels. Total saving for the housebuilder around £150. Good job guys!

Ever wondered why it’s so hard to build in the UK? Apparently we shouldn’t densify zone 2 bungalows in London because people might not want to live 4 floors up. 🤷♂️
Do people want to live 4 floors up? Where do residents go while you're levelling their homes for property development? Most London boroughs are sending people 3-5 hours travel out of London, to the rest of the UK, because of the cost & scarcity of affordable accommodation.
