People Like Stars by Patrice Lawrence is a beautifully constructed mystery adventure with three converging storylines. Lots of themes explored including friendship, forgiveness and different family structures. Definitely one for Years 5/6.

Almost everyone who works in a primary school accepts that the current curriculum is overloaded. We simply can't squeeze in everything we're supposed to. However, there are two things we must try and ensure take place each day: independent reading and class storytime.

The Dinosaur Next Door by @dc_litchfield is a delight. Beautifully simple story about identity and allowing people to live their lives. Dazzling illustrations on every page. His use of colour to show emotion at different times is something that children will love exploring.

When recommending a book to a child, 'Here's a book I read, loved and think you'll enjoy' carries more weight than 'Here's a book from a list that someone else says is good'. Lists can be a real help and a great starting point but knowing (at least some of) the books is crucial.
