I was fortunate enough to have an amazing Year 10 student in on work experience. She loves reading and spent almost thirty minutes recommending books to my class, who were totally absorbed by her passion. I've written about it for the @OpenUni_RfP site.

If a school understands the importance of reading for pleasure and enjoyment, it doesn't mean that they don't also understand the importance of phonics, fluency, comprehension and all the other essential aspects of reading. They're not mutually exclusive.

I'm running an online session with @RuddickRichard on Wed 13th Nov (3:45pm) about using graphic novels in class and building a classroom reading culture. Lots of recommendations and book talk! It's the last joint one we're doing for a while.

It feels like there's a tough term coming up in schools, with issues around SEND, behaviour and funding all coming to a head. I feel extremely fortunate to work alongside the most amazing set of teachers and support staff. The job would be pretty much impossible if I didn't.

I think everyone who works in a primary school accepts that the curriculum is overloaded. We simply can't squeeze in everything that we're supposed to. However, there are two things that we must try and ensure take place each day: class storytime and independent reading.
