New preprint with @nathanieldaw and @DShohamy!. We often have to make choices we've never made before. One way to do so is by knitting together relevant memories to form new relationships. When do people access their memories to construct preferences?.

We think this provides evidence for recent ideas suggesting that model-based inference as it is typically studied (reactively, at decision time) is one of a more general set of computations that access memory at different times ( .

Using behavior to index strategy use and fMRI to decode memory access, we found that proactive memory access is more common and that it allows for efficient inference. But we also found that people access memories reactively when choices are linked to more numerous associations.

In this paper, we asked whether:. i) it is actually the case that both strategies exist and support inference,. ii) proactive memory access provides benefits (like more efficient choices) at decision time, and. iii) people rely on each strategy when it is sensible to do so?.

It isn't clear if/when one of these strategies is better than the other. The possibility of proactive computation in particular implies that the brain has to be judicious about which memories it accesses and when, since there are so many possible future actions to contemplate.

Some studies have found that memories are accessed and integrated at the moment a decision is faced (reactively), while others have found that memory integration happens earlier (proactively).
