For #UCMCSurgSpirit2022, dug up this pic of part of my intern class & graduating chief class. Amazing group of general, transplant, pediatric, MIS, plastic, colorectal and breast surgeons. Taught me so much & still are close friends/mentors. This is my #WhyUChicagoSurgery pride!

Different drivers of #HCC likely affect differing response to therapies. Entangled with geographic differences in patient accrual, I suspect this explains part of the variability in data across 1st line IO HCC studies. #GI22

“The ability to perform academic tasks during adolescence is nice to have, but organizing your society around it is absurd. It is not as important as the ability to work in teams; to sacrifice for the common good; to be honest, kind, and trustworthy.”

Game changer for surgical procedures. Surgical planning with digital replica is precise, efficient and improves safety. Huge part of my practice and will be standard of care soon.

Tip for surgical trainees (and really all surgeons!). Read every single publication by @JCAlverdy. Especially the perspective pieces. This is brilliant 👇

Dear Black & Brown people: I know about the poor treatment that our ancestors have received by the health care system. I lecture about it to Med students. I also know the science about the #COVID vaccine. I do this for me, my family, & you. #BlackMenInMedicine #RightToBareArms

Where education advances material goals it should also include instruction about our mind and emotions—how to achieve a calm mind and develop altruism. An important part of establishing peace of mind is being able to apply emotional hygiene—learning to tackle destructive emotions

As human beings we essentially belong to the same family and we have to think of each other as part of ‘us’. To develop peace in the world, we have to educate people to understand that we are all the same in being human.

A core skill of emotional intelligence is treating your feelings as a rough draft. Like art, emotions are works in progress. It rarely serves you well to frame your first sketch. As you gain perspective, you can revise what you feel. Sometimes you even start over from scratch.
