That said, I'm glad books with hyperspecific Sandersonian hard magic systems are around because they enrage the "I'm an extremely inclusive and empathetic person but it's really problematic that autists exist where I'm at risk of seeing them" people so much.

I liked what Steven Erikson did in Malazan Book of the Fallen, where the magic you see the most of is relatively well-explained but there's like 20 other kinds that vary wildly in how well-understood they are so there's still a good amount of "wtf is that"
A question for my fellow fantasy aficionados: Do you prefer magic that's wild and dangerous, or is it better when books have it be rules-heavy and predictable?

Chrono Trigger! The reveal that Lavos had engineered humanity's entire history just to harvest us blew my mind as a kid. "Grown like farm animals, waiting to be slaughtered... All of our history... our art and science... All to meet the needs of that... beast..."

That the books are obviously never happening is whatever, it's this absurd pretense that they are that gets my goat.
George R.R. Martin defends working on other projects while writing the ‘THE WINDS OF WINTER’ ❄️ “Yes, I do love Winds of Winter. I'm still interested in it, I'm still working on it, but honestly, I love these other things, too.” (via: @EW

and her rejection of it had caused some friction. when stuff came out about her undermining her friends and seeing them as competition, i recalled that and just felt very sad. For everybody. There's no point to this story. just needed to let it out of my head.

By a weird coincidence, like a week before the Sinder drama first blew up i'd watched one of her VODs where she mentioned that after a recent trip to Japan with friends all her family wanted to know was what business-related stuff she had done, that this was their usual mentality

I've never quite understood the "anime also sounds bad in Japanese you just don't understand the language" idea because is there any other country where you can just straight up say all of their cartoons have bad voice acting and people are like "sooo true"

I strongly suspect this is wisdom that will bring no profit to the wise, but nevertheless: Why is there so much overlap between furries and diaper fetishists that somebody had to coin the term "diaperfur" to describe the phenomenon?

A machine doing a mediocre job is generally going to be better than a talented human not doing it. It's an ROI calculation. I can't afford to keep the guy who keeps German in my pocket, so I'm going to make do with Google Lens
I am genuinely disturbed that so many responses to this are along the lines of 'AI will do that'. Sure, why revive the notion that editing and translating the writings of past people is inherently valuable when we can just get a machine to do it badly? What is wrong with people

@sarahcstock Ironic calling libertarians juvenile and then saying "we can just ban bad things" without any thought of second or third order effects lmfao.

I watch movies sometimes. I'm not very invested in the medium, don't spend significant amounts of time watching it, and have little knowledge or understanding of it. "John Markley is not a cinephile" isn't snobbery, it's just words actually meaning things.

I just think words are better tools for communication when people are consistent in how they use them. The only hipster douchebag bid for social prestige in the conversation is what you brought to it.
Trying to be a subculture snob works a lot better when your subculture of choice is actually exclusive, like extreme piercing or money laundering through art galleries. When your subculture is fucking Mario and Call of Duty, it doesn't really work nearly as well.
