The 11+ is tragic, so watch the film from the 1st Dec if you fancy😅Most important are the people who can't reach their potential because of it.

Jack Deasley doesn't think the 11+ test can accurately judge academic potential, and he has every reason to think that. This flawed old test has had its day. #timesupforthetest

Today Bridget Phillipson announced that a new target will be set of 90% of 6-year-olds passing the phonics screening check at the end of Year 1. Currently 83% pass at the end of Year 1 and 89% at the end of Year 2. They also announce a new reading test for children in Year 8 at

An overdone and ineffective policy to re-engage disaffected young people. Children will now do compulsory tests in 7/14 years of their schooling. The constant exam-ification of our schools doesn't get us anywhere; tackling the root of why these young people are disillusioned does

Too many pupils are disengaged after moving from primary to secondary school, leaving them without the skills they need for work and life. Our new Year 8 reading test will help teachers to spot struggling readers early and provide pupils with the support they need to achieve and

Deeply predictable. We don't have SATs data for last year's GCSE students (Covid) so can't record progress as normal. Suddenly, when schools are ranked on raw attainment, not progress, grammars surge to the top. Just reinforces that grammars add no more value than other schools.

Maintenance grants will only go to students studying 'priority courses aligned with the govt's missions'. This is sad: it reinforces a transactional relationship with HE institutions, where the only point is to receive a passport into the labour market. https://t.co/MiBA0bP1CD

Thought this striking: using last weeks voting intention by school type. Big Reform lead among those who went to a state school, Tories best result among grammar school alum & Labour actually have a fairly big lead among private school attendees, consistent in other recent polls

Read it! It’s a man-made famine, it’s because Israel block aid, and an Israeli Minister has SAID they want to eradicate the whole of Gaza City. This is the worst of humanity and it’s unforgivable if govts take anything other than the starkest of measures - albeit far too late

@Cambridge_Uni 🤝This meant more students saw their relationship with school as transactional - they attended school in exchange for being able to perform well in their GCSEs and move on to their next steps 📈But behaviour tended to improve, perhaps as more pupils took their studies seriously

@Cambridge_Uni 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Families knew they were important and teachers' jobs rested on the performance of their students. 👦Above all, the pupils knew GCSEs were important - for further study, employment, and, in the words of one child, to have a 'good life'. They dictated one's position in society.

@Cambridge_Uni 🧐The education landscape also changed from the 1980s, which altered how schools operated day-to-day... 🎖️League tables were published and public Ofsted reports for each school were published for the first time - both of which impacted how much funding a school received.

@Cambridge_Uni 🎓But Higher Education was booming - in 1967, 12% of school leavers went to uni - by the 2000s, this was 43%. 👨‍🎓More places + more aspirations to uni + more qualified school leavers (in part due to GCSE) + a changing job market = more students going to university!
