I came back to twitter against all my principles for this really poor joke.

Transfers do crazy things to football fans. The replies to this are something else. The 'joke' club have just pulled off a statement win against the 'ambitious' one - a victory we should be remembering for years. But these people are more bothered about transfers than results.

And to add to this - he talks about GPs working until 2am and he's all "oh, but we don't want that". So why are you making the contrast with "lazy" GPs in the same sentence then?.

I think Streeting is smarter and more knowledgeable about health than most of his predecessors. But his obsession with headlines and positioning will stop him ever bringing meaningful change to general practice.

He doesn't need to be told this. Streeting is not dumb. But 'systemic problems to blame for patients facing variations' doesn't make as good a Mail or Telegraph headline as 'we need to tackle lazy GPs' (and it doesn't fit in with Starmer's wish to be Thatcher).

He says: 'What [the PM] and I find it harder to explain or to justify is that variation in performance.” I've spent the last three months looking at data on general practice and I can tell it - it comes down to staffing levels, deprivation and funding

But more importantly, this is pure cynicism and - yes - laziness from Streeting. First, are there lazy GPs? Yes. You know where else you find lazy people? Every single profession that has ever existed.

As much as I hate posting on Twitter these days, I feel I have to for this story: ICBs must target ‘coasting’ GPs, says Streeting First, well done @Davewwest on a great story.
