Design Systems Slack:
I'm tired of people saying that CSS is a useless skill to have. I built up my whole career around it and I'm proud of the work I've done and what I've learned. Stop minimizing this skill just because you think it's hard.
For some of us, it's a primary means to make a living.
@jcj
I found out because I woke up to my phone sending me a notification that my phone service would be shut off soon. And all my corp account stuff was locked out. Saw the email later.
Design Systems are for PEOPLE.
You know what else is for people?
Accessibility. Inclusion. Diversity. Culture. Privacy. Ethics. Performance.
Think these things have nothing to do with design systems
YOU ARE WRONG.
I was going to wait until next week to announce, but I signed so that is pretty locked in, & I'm not sure I can contain my excitement much longer… so here it is!
I’m joining
@asana
as a Product Design Manager for their Design Systems team! I’m so stoked to work with this team!
With full hearts and steady hands, with faith in America and in each other, with a love of country — and a thirst for justice — let us be the nation that we know we can be.
I’m happy to share that today, I’m starting a new position as Principal Product Designer at Microsoft.
I'll be working on the Fluent Design System team to integrate generative AI across Microsoft products and redefine how humans interact with software.
I had a job offer and was gonna excitedly announce it once all the paperwork was complete.
But the company just rescinded their offer.
Apparently their legal decided that my conference & other community activities are a conflict of interest. :(
Some men in the quote tweets are saying I'm being fascist by moderating this way. This is an inclusive community that people choose to join, and it has a code of conduct. If they don't agree with the code of conduct, they can leave. That's how community moderation works.
Thank you to everyone reaching out in DMs. Yes, I was impacted. But right now, I'm just reeling/processing, so I need some time before doing a job search. But I'll post publicly when I'm ready! I appreciate the offers to help! 💜
I have news to share. Today is my last day consulting with Amazon.
Then I get a nice holiday break. Then I start my new job.
Today, I accepted a full time job offer at… Amazon. 😃
Senior Design System Lead.
New year, new(ish) job. Yay!
Hi, world. I just wanted to tweet this to preemptively answer some questions.
- I left my job at Amazon.
- I don't have something lined up and don't plan to in the near future.
- I am focusing on my health and wellbeing.
- I will blog soon about things.
Be well and thank you. 💕
one time someone told me I would never become a manager because I don't present well with my dyed hair, piercings, and always wearing black.
lol. now I can prove them wrong.
Put together a timelapse of my CSS collector’s cabinet to show how it’s being drawn. 🎨
(This is after-the-fact, so it’s missing the trial and error and long pauses where I stare into the distance.)

I wasn't expecting this tweet to blow up like it did. A few follow up clarifications to respond to quote tweets:
1. yes, Black Asians exist. I didn't mean to imply they don't. I just wanted to encourage folks not to disrespect the Black community to lift up the Asian community.
I don't ask for much but when it comes to being the 1st to introduce design tokens to the world I will fight for that credit. 1st external mention was me presenting at a conference.
I always try to give credit where due & in this case the credit is mine. Let me have this 1 thing
I forgot who it was, but someone once tweeted about putting an emoji in their name on LinkedIn to suss out if recruiters were scraping info for spam via their messaging or via email.
An immediate indicator that it's automated spam.
CW: Asian woman fetishism & racism, sexual assault
I'm about to get very personal and things will be uncomfortable to read. They are uncomfortable for me to write.
But I felt this urge to finally attempt to tell my story. Part of me wants to delete this already. But here we go.
So proud of my brother who just paid off his student loans. We are debt-free siblings!
This is huge because my family history is riddled with chronic debt. We broke free.
My feed is all:
- designers upset
- people thoughtleadering about why designers shouldn’t be upset
- people reveling in designers being upset
- people just reveling in all the chaos, no matter who is upset
🙃
While everyone is geeking out on campaign design systems all of a sudden, I just wanna remind people that
@MinaMarkham
was out here doing a design system for a candidate years ago 🙆🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️💁🏻♀️
If you cannot explain these concepts to another programmer, then you are not a Web Developer
- producing & spinning silk
- trapping insects
- wrapping prey
- laying eggs
- using spinnerets
- eating your own web to recoup energy
- saving "Some Pig"
🕸️🕷️
seeing conversation about renaming master branch to main which makes total sense to me. gonna look into how to do it for my own.
but it would be amazing if
@github
just did this globally for everyone.
Is your child texting about Design Systems? Know the signs:
LMAO: Love Modular Atomic Objects
FTW: Forms That Work
AFAIK: Accessible Frontend Architecture I Know
WTF: When to Flex
IIRC: I Integrate React Components
ICYMI: If Components Yield Modifiers Intuitively

Farewell my sweet, beautiful girl. You have been such a huge part of my life (quite literally — 20 beautiful years).
2. I also didn't intend to compare our oppressions as the same. Just that they aren't new. But while my intent was to respect Black people, unfortunately my impact was that I still offended. So I am very sorry. Please forgive me. I do love the solidarity.
I SEE YOU BOUGHT A MATTRESS. THAT MUST MEAN YOU COLLECT MATTRESSES. SO I WILL BOMBARD YOU WITH ADS FOR MORE MATTRESSES. HERE IS A 25% OFF DEAL TO BUY ANOTHER MATTRESS THAT YOU JUST BOUGHT AT FULL PRICE.
On the call with Figma today about the Schema conference and their A/V tech said, "consider not wearing black for the video".
@rogie
was like, “um, you're talking to a designer.”
🤪 LMAO
My literal closet:
the ultimate goal of a design system is to serve your user needs. you may think it's spending too much time on building pieces/patterns, but that's the whole point. you now NO LONGER have to focus on building them and can focus on the bigger picture: people's needs.
This is a friendly reminder that if you plan to work on your laptop on a plane, to get a privacy screen. Especially when your slides you’re working on are labeled “highly confidential”. 🤦🏻♀️
Can we please stop calling design systems a “buzzword”? It is a full-on practice and it's got real people who are practitioners who solve real work problems. Can we just go a day without belittling this work?
YES!
I don't want to get ahead of myself since I got so let down when my signed offer was rescinded due to legal not liking my community activities (conference, authoring, etc).
But I was just told that the company I was most excited about is making an offer!
I'm so excited!
I’d like to take a moment to brag on myself because I'm feeling proud. I made it two nights in a row at design meetups without drinking any booze or snacking on anything. I just drank water (finishing my day's gallon). I'm feeling confident I'll nail this 30-day challenge! 💪🏼
I am a nice person. But when I choose an aisle seat, it's because I want it! I gotta use the lav a lot. LOL.
I often get couples who book window seats behind each other and ask me to give up my seat so they can sit together.
I say no. And they look at me like I punched them.
3. I turned off comments to avoid white supremacists from trolling. It wasn't intended to keep Black or Asian people from responding. Unfortunately it's difficult to guess what kind of response you will get so it's easier to just turn replies off.
CSS is amazing. I am sad that it seems so undervalued at times. Many of the most senior programmers I know can't grasp it. If you can, know that you are amazing. And there are jobs for you. Try design systems. It welcomes you! 💜💜💜
Words that make me cringe when it comes to design/tech work: war room, weaponize, battlefield/battleground, arms race…
We make websites. Apps. Printed materials. Products. Nothing we do is *that* serious.
In 2016 I won this Pappy in a Hillary campaign benefit auction. Over the 4 years, I couldn't bring myself to drink it & considered selling. It's worth around $2k. (I contributed less). Today seemed like the BEST day to open this & enjoy it. Congrats Kamala & Joe on your win!
I’ve been web making for 22 years. 18 professionally. 15 focused on design systems.
I hope I prove being in the industry long doesn't mean you become a Statler & Waldorf Design Twitter downer.
Welcome to my lawn. Enjoy the tree houses. Run in the sprinklers. Have some lemonade.
Thread: I watch a TON of design systems talks. Have done so for the last several years. I notice themes and patterns.
Design systems people, you know I love you. But we need to talk.
We need to talk plagiarism.
I’m so excited to be presenting alongside teammates,
@ainsleywagon
&
@ivycodes
at
@figmadesign
’s Schema. We’ll be sharing how we use Figma and Design Tokens on the Asana Design System team, which we used to ship dark mode.
I’ll be okay. Right now really upset.
But I’m headed to art week in Miami for what was going to be a pre-job-start inspiration trip.
But now just gonna be a take-my-mind-off-being-rejected trip.
Glad I booked this on points. My budget is even tighter now! 🫠
But I’ll be okay.
Don't let anyone tell you public speaking is a waste of time. Do what you love and be what you aspire to be. Inspire and be inspired. Motivate and be motivated. Teach and learn. Make new friends. Travel the world. Be a light in the world where it is so badly needed.
Are you famous for a thing? Speaking/writing about the thing?
Did a woman and/or person of color inspire you to pursue that thing through their own hard work and experience for that thing?
Have you thanked or acknowledged that person in your work?
Today is a good day to start.
