Enlarged nucleoli in old cells lose capacity to exclude non nucleolar molecules (even a GFP-NLS). Changes in the condensation properties of the enlarged nucleolus may explain this phenotype. (4/5)

What is different in long-lived cells with smaller nucleoli? 🧬.In old cells, large nucleoli (>3.5 µm²) cause Rad52 DNA repair foci to form within the nucleolus. This disrupts repair and leads to genomic instability. (3/5)
