I passed my written and oral comprehensive exams! I’m now a doctoral candidate.
Not pictured: Several hundred e-books, countless Coke ICEEs, blood, sweat, and tears.
Positively delighted to share the news that I will be attending William & Mary for my PhD! I know this has been a remarkably challenging application cycle for everyone, so I feel especially grateful for this dream opportunity.

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been in a bit of a health scare. After a very stressful couple of weeks filled with surgery, biopsies, and weighing treatment options, I received word today that my autoimmune disease is currently in remission.
I gave Felicity a lecture about how Darnton is really important for researchers of early modern culture, but she’s still outraged about some of his source material..
My first big research trip to the British Library is coming up. Any recommendations on where to stay in London that would be convenient to both the Library and sightseeing? Trying to stretch a generous fellowship as far as possible, so affordability is helpful!
Happy 78th birthday to my Papa, one of the few key people who inspired my love for history while I was growing up. He still has a flip phone so he won’t see this, but I love him so much and wanted to post in celebration of him!
Pinching myself that the results are even real, and still need to process the monumental and indescribable relief that I’m feeling. As for tonight, however, this joyous occasion calls for celebratory takeout. Happy Valentine’s Day and SLÁINTE!
Charlie Dent (on CNN) just referred to Trump’s indecision as “ADD.” Neurodivergent folks can hear your disregard for us loudly and clearly when you falsely use our daily reality as a synonym for the erratic behavior of a demagogue. We’re suffering so much in this pandemic. Stop.
Virginians, today was the last day for early voting. If you haven’t been able to vote yet, be sure to show up to do your part on November 2nd! Proud, as this was my first time voting as a Virginia resident.

Some of today’s sources of joy: A miniature milliner’s shop, a woman’s prosthetic that conceals a derringer, and the ability to slip masks off long enough to snap a photo with those you love so dearly. 👒💉
@Lady_Historian
The ability to research well. Compiling research findings coherently, i.e. organization and argumentation. In my grading, I often find that I can recognize a history major before they even tell me their majors, because most of them have excellent writing skills.
My best buddy back home in Florida celebrates his sweet sixteen today. Thank you to Sammy kitty for 16 years of pure joy. I can’t wait to give him the biggest hug and a million kisses to celebrate!
My heart is breaking more and more each day. Sending all of my love to Surfside from North Florida, and my prayers for the lost and deceased, their families, and the rescue teams who are working so hard.
Earlier today, I walked by this really moving area where family members and friends are honoring the 147 wonderful people who are still unaccounted for as a result of the condo collapse in Surfside, Florida. This is so heartbreaking. We continue to hope and pray.
Michael’s doing yard work, and I’m set up in a lounge chair on the porch to enjoy the gorgeous weather. Pretty much an ideal spot to finish grading, the final task of my master’s degree!
My boyfriend said this morning, while giving me a peck on the nose: “I should learn Morse code so that I can tell you messages with kisses.”
Just figured it was worth documenting.

I’d also like to thank you for your insightful response to my question today. I’ve done only a bit of work on hunger strikes - I presented my paper “Mythologizing Sacrifice” at

2020 - but I’d never considered contextualizing them with the collective trauma of WWI!
Despite the fact that I’m turning 24 in a couple of weeks, I’d never known of the glory and convenience of press-on nails. I’ve now ordered them in bulk as a birthday gift to myself, and feel very grateful I’ll be taking this discovery into the remainder of my twenties.
“Joe would go into everything at a million miles an hour and then change his mind.” - Bernard Rhodes
Remembering the man who had, in my opinion, the second greatest musical mind of all time (after Mozart) on what would have been his 67th birthday.

Wednesday afternoon we went to walk the Stations of the Cross. It was relatively empty (and we’re now fully 💉) so I was able to walk inside Holy Hill for the first time. I haven’t been in a church for just over a year now, so this was a pleasant reintroduction to sacred space.
@dr_mbutler
I’ll be thinking of y’all at Flagler, and hoping you stay safe! W&M is at 93% of the student body and 90% of employees. They’re requiring the vaccine, so hoping to be at 100% by the end of September.
@DanMulhall
Thank you so much for visiting Dr. McMahon’s British Empire class Teams meeting today, Ambassador. Your lecture was a highlight in this unique semester!

You kitty is precious! I have a Siberian, too. I have severe allergies & severe persistent asthma. I never thought I could have a cat & not feel miserable all the time. But I do! I only get itchy if she scratches me. This article headline is misleading. Hypo means less, not none!

Thanks for this! Jacksonville born and raised, moved to Milwaukee for grad school. I always cheer for the Packers, but today I had loyalty to my home team. It was a great game!

My boyfriend and I were just discussing, while playing Sims 4 together, how this is the feature we both miss the most. Managing photographs and memories in TS4 is impossible.
Happy National First-Gen College Celebration Day! To all (fellow) first-gen students, keep up the great work and feel proud of your accomplishments today.

You’re on to my secret! A splash of Bailey’s coffee creamer is great for a non-alcoholic version, too. A sprinkle of chili pepper along with it (to mimic a Mexican hot chocolate) is perfect to cut the sweetness.
Trump says he’s the person who has done the most for black folks after Abraham Lincoln.. Yet both are white men, and he didn’t know who Frederick Douglass was.
@jhuebenthal
I met some very nice folks from American Studies at the virtual events I attended, it’s always lovely to have interdepartmental community. Thank you so much!
@AnilaLahiri
So excited about it. I’ve been meaning to message you back about moving, by the way. As this Tweet implies I’ve been very.. erm.. productive? In finding incredible S&P shakers, at least. The joys of moving across the country!
@ambercaleb17
My Florida nostalgia is so intense. What I would give to be on St. George Street in St. Augustine with a Hyppo popsicle and that sun beating down on my skin..
