As a follow up - what are things you know now you wish you knew coming into your PhD?.
Out of curiosity, grad students/faculty, how many of you are the first person in your family to get a PhD (but not a uni degree, ie your parents have uni degrees but not a PhD or other grad degree)?.

Reimbursement culture assumes a ton: family money, savings, etc and can close the door to a lot of exceptionally talented/smart people from diverse backgrounds of all sorts. If we want academia to change, we need to make it economically (in addition to other things) accessible!.
@AliMicMac Lllllooookkkk. Reimbursement life is of the Devil. And then you are at the mercy of the postal service! Just a supreme struggle that sometimes makes you wanna scream.

Currently trying to balance reimbursement life + stipend life and @CulturedModesty’s words really hitting home! Would love to see a time when grad students aren’t having to fund travel upfront on credit cards etc #phdchat.
Look! I’ll be 31 in late July and thinking about how long I’ve lived the stipend life makes me sick. You can simultaneously be grateful for where you are while also holding incredible grief about all it took to get where you are…especially being broker than a joke alladatime.

As it seems this is starting to get out and I think I’m allowed to share now - I’m thrilled to have been selected as the Barra Material Culture Dissertation Fellow at the McNeil Center at U Penn for the 2023-2024 academic year!.
