Auld Lang Syne, the Scots-language poem written by Robert Burns in 1788, was set to a much older Scottish/Irish melody and is now sung all over the world to welcome the new year. Happy New Year from the west of Ireland!
A full house last night for my first ever live show in Dublin. When the audience rose to give a standing ovation, I had to fight back the tears. An incredible night I will never forget. Such a different experience from playing outside my cottage!

This song was first recorded 400 years ago in the Skene Manuscript, a collection of Scottish airs written around 1620, though it is thought to be much older.
For the Winter Solstice today, an ancient Celtic melody now known as The Breton Carol. I learned this tune from the late great Paddy Maloney of The Chieftains and I've always thought it captured the magic of the darkest day of the year. Happy Solstice from the west of Ireland

Viola da Gamba, this is my favourite instrument. It's a bit of a guitar cello cross. It was popular in the Renaissance period and is much older than the cello. This song, "Loves Farewell" is from 1605 Scotland by Tobias Hume

On Christmas Night, written in 1684 by Irish Franciscan friar Luke Wadding who was responsible for creating the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. I’ve always thought this carol perfectly captures the joy of Christmas. From the west of Ireland, wishing you a very merry Christmas!

The Auld Triangle, my favourite Dublin folk song. I first learned it from Shane Mac Gowan's incredibly powerful and raw version on The Pogues 1984 album Red Roses. Shane had learned this song from his hero, Irish poet Brendan Behan. Rest in Peace Shane you will be dearly missed

The Dawning of the Day. 350 years ago, in the 1670s, Irish harper Thomas Connellan looked west across the Atlantic and wrote this beautiful tune. Much later words by the great Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh were added giving the song the title we know it by today, Raglan Road
