This genetic organisation ("noncontiguous operon") therefore allows the Tha system to be on during the lysogeny, but to be turned off during the lytic cycle. We suspect that such regulation is quite common for prophage-carried anti-phage systems.

To avoid this, an immunity protein (Ith) is encoded antisense to Tha. Ith protein inhibits Tha only during the lytic cycle, preventing Tha from targeting its own prophage.

However, when targeting conserved components, there is a chance that Tha also targets its own prophage when this prophage enters the lytic cycle, leading to autoimmunity and impaired phage particle production.

Many staphylococcal phages express the system Tha during the prophage stage (lysogeny), protecting the prophage and its bacterial host from external phage attack. Tha works by recognising highly conserved phage tail proteins, activating non-specific RNase activity.

Just missing April fool's, here is something that is no laughing matter:.In @NatureMicrobiol, we describe how a prophage avoids autoimmunity from its own defence systems.

🚨🫴Final PhD work is out 🧬 Cam1, a ligand-activated transmembrane pore, is associated with type III CRISPR systems and depolarises the host membrane during infection. Proud of @ChristianF_Baca 🫡and co-authors for doing the heavy lifting for a beautiful (I’m biased) story 🫴🚨.

Excited to share my first work in the @MarraffiniLab, now online @Nature ! We show that type III CRISPR utilizes a transmembrane effector, which we call Cam1, to provide anti-phage immunity! Synopsis 🧵:.

In 1731 King Frederick I of Sweden was gifted a lion, one of the first lions in Scandinavia. When the lion died shortly after, it was given to a taxidermist and this was the end product. The taxidermist and the museum keepers had never actually seen a lion before, and did not
