underscores something I've long found disturbing: that we (white people) speak about the Civil Rights Movement as having somehow concluded -- successfully -- in the year that its most visible leader was assassinated.
I was glad to join over 500 Johns Hopkins University faculty, staff, alumni, and students in signing this open letter to the leaders of Johns Hopkins Medicine, regarding their response to a definition of "privilege" published in a recent Johns Hopkins Medicine newsletter.
The academy must introduce students to music by women/non-binary/POC composers, and expect them to be well-versed in this repertoire. If we aren't actively pushing back against the received wisdom that we call a canon, we're complicit in the regressive programming of ensembles.
Does anyone I know have connections to
@LastWeekTonight
with John Oliver? I think the story of Johns Hopkins' efforts to start a private, armed police force needs to be dissected in depth on a show like that.
I could do without a lot/most of Twitter, but
#Baltimore
Twitter is too important. How many of you wonderful people are on another platform consistently at this point? Or have you, like me, created multiple other accounts that you don't actually use, at least not yet?
1. Please text me first. :)
2. I'm personally OK at the moment, but I would be even better if you join me in calling for a ceasefire (and calling on your elected officials to do the same) and donate to organizations that provide direct humanitarian aid to Palestinians.
This is a common strategy: conversations about Johns Hopkins' proposed police force have consistently excluded or ignored the work of our own scholars on policing, because those scholars don't think a private, armed university police force is a good idea.
Why doesn't Harvard's new antisemitism task force include its own scholars who study antisemitism + Israel-Palestine? Because those scholars won't endorse a crackdown on pro-Palestinian free speech. Which is what big donors demand.
JHU is proposing this weapon "after consulting extensively with outside experts in progressive policing and benchmarking against the most reform-minded policing policies nationwide." That speaks volumes about Hopkins, and about "reform" in the context of militarized policing.
This is the "patrol rifle" cited in Johns Hopkins University's draft policies for its private police department. They will be patrolling college campuses, a hospital, and the neighborhoods around them.
The academy must introduce students to music by women/non-binary/POC composers, and expect them to be well-versed in this repertoire. If we aren't actively pushing back against the received wisdom that we call a canon, we're complicit in the regressive programming of ensembles.

@RepKweisiMfume
, as your constituent, I find it disturbing that you just supported a resolution that effectively deems me – an American Jew from an Israeli family – to be anti-Semitic. There are many Jewish people in Baltimore who do not feel supported by your actions.
The 2024 Baltimore DPW calendar is full of mistakes. A prominent one is that they added a day to November, and removed October 22. Weird stuff
@BaltimoreDPW
! Anyway still a highlight of the year to get our annual calendar!
I know I look at the world through Baltimore-colored glasses, but I've been sad to see Johns Hopkins make such a big deal of the fact that their new building is in DC. I don't think I've ever seen this kind of PR about the school's home city. As always, Baltimore deserves better.
This Friday 3/30 at the State House in Annapolis, there will be another hearing for HB/SB 1803, a bill enabling the creation of private university police forces. If you are unable to attend, please join me in submitting written testimony to Students Against Private Police.
@erinoverbey
I hadn't seen this before. You'd think a journalist would focus on the power differential here: heavily armed person, employed by the state, assaults an unarmed person without similar physical or legal protections.
Moreover, we shouldn't name this scandal for Daniels, just as we shouldn't have done so with
@MonicaLewinsky
. I realize that naming scandals for the men involved will require a numbering system to keep them all straight ("Bill Clinton Scandal
#412
, Trump Scandal
#721
"); so be it.
For those of you who would like to share feedback about Johns Hopkins University's ongoing efforts to launch a private, armed police force, and more specifically about how such a police force would operate, there are now two sets of draft policies available for public comment. 1/
Excited to announce 5 new License Plate Reader (LPR) locations on South Baltimore Peninsula. Thanks to our community leaders for leading the way.
It's great to work with community, law enforcement partners, & Team 46 to get this public safety initiative across the finish line!
I know that folks are looking for ways to support their Jewish friends right now. Personally, I would feel most supported if you join me in calling for a halt to Israeli retaliation in Gaza, and to American support thereof.
I just saw an ad on FB that says "Baltimore stands with Israel." An organization cannot and does not speak for an entire city, and shouldn't be allowed to buy an ad that presumes to do so.
Baltimore friends, if you are able, I encourage you to turn to and support local news outlets that are truly of and for our city, starting with
@baltbeat

Police didn't respond to a large group gathering in the Inner Harbor area on Friday. The crowd of thousands of adults gathered downtown starting around noon, walking, talking, and eating. No one arrived to "monitor the activity" and no streets or businesses were closed.
@ashoncrawley
"Don’t be in a hurry to condemn because he doesn’t do what you do or think as you think or as fast. There was a time when you didn’t know what you know today.” — Malcolm X
It's wild how much the police mess up – I'm not even talking about the racist violence, just basic incompetence – and folks still think they're the answer to every problem.
A highly paid elected official suggesting that he is on the ground and in touch with the people while Baltimore's activists are "high up on their perch" is wild.
Bates: "Misleading talking points may sound good to the activists who would like you to believe this from high up on their perch overlooking the streets of Baltimore, or from those who see their city in a view from their county homes."
@ChrisVanHollen
Senator, the only cessation long enough for this – and the only way to save countless innocent Palestinians – is an immediate ceasefire. I am a Jewish constituent, and I ask, again, that you call for one.
.
@MayorBMScott
, I hope you will consider following Mayor Johnson's lead. I and so many other Jewish people in
#Baltimore
have been calling for a ceasefire for months. It would be meaningful to have you join us.
Brandon Johnson, the mayor of Chicago, just called for a ce
@sefire

resolution in City Council. We'd be the largest city to do it. Let's go!!
When the leadership of an institution – in this case, the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine – has only consisted of white men for 130 years, It seems both appropriate and necessary to share a basic definition of privilege.
I was glad to join over 500 Johns Hopkins University faculty, staff, alumni, and students in signing this open letter to the leaders of Johns Hopkins Medicine, regarding their response to a definition of "privilege" published in a recent Johns Hopkins Medicine newsletter.
I lived and died with this team for almost 2 decades, and even though I don't watch anymore, I remember days like this one in my bones. I'm sad for our city, because
#Baltimore
is and deserves the best, always.
@ClintSmithIII
Honestly, I want every president to have a therapist. Like, before they get the rest of their staff together. It should be a requirement.
Just one month ago, Worley said he didn't want to "talk bad" about a victim; he then did just that. After he was confirmed as police commissioner, he apologized. Now he is doing the same thing with a neighborhood. This is a pattern, or worse yet, a strategy, of victim-blaming.
Genuine chills watching
@BmoreDoc
,
@ShaivaughnC
,
@expandyourfocus
, Tawanda Jones and more holding the Baltimore Police Department accountable today. It's an honor to share a city with these extraordinary citizens.
One of my favorite pieces by
@AaronMMaybin
. This is what the extraordinary
@es_snipes
has carried with her since July 2014. Like Venida Browder, she is a victim of the psychological & physiological trauma set in motion by the racist murder of a loved one.
The
@baltimoresun
was just bought by the owner of Sinclair Broadcasting. The Sun's employees found out about this private deal only moments before an article about it went live on their website. 1/
This is so disappointing. Worley presided over major tragedies in the last 10 years (the murder of Tyrone West and the mass shooting at Brooklyn Homes, and these are just two of the most prominent). It feels, as usual, like this confirmation was a foregone conclusion.
New: His rise through the BPD ranks cut against and in favor of Rich Worley during his nomination process. Public officials who have worked with him lined up to praise his integrity. And community activists painted him as a product of a corrupt culture.
Hamas unleashed a terrorist attack because they fear nothing more than Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in peace.
To continue down the path of terror, violence, killing, and war is to give Hamas what they seek.
We can’t do that.
“You can’t behold evil and then return and not speak on it.”
Ta-Nehisi Coates speaks about how an experience in Palestine illuminated the connections between the African American and Palestinian liberation struggles, and the moral responsibility to speak out.
This is extraordinary.
@BaltCouncil
, you have many constituents, including Jewish constituents, who want to see this in
#Baltimore
. I want to vote for folks who are willing to stand up for peace.
BREAKING: The City of Chicago has officially called for a ceasefire! It’s an unprecedented landmark in the fight for Palestinian liberation, and sends a message that cannot be ignored.
Below is a joint statement from Jewish Voice for Peace Chicago & IfNotNow Chicago:
I was glad to join over 500 Johns Hopkins University faculty, staff, alumni, and students in signing this open letter to the leaders of Johns Hopkins Medicine, regarding their response to a definition of "privilege" published in a recent Johns Hopkins Medicine newsletter.
This went out to the entire university community because Dr. Golden shared a straightforward definition of "privilege." Presumably internal responses coupled with El*n M*sk's prompted this walkback. This is what
@tressiemcphd
means when she says "the institution cannot love you."
Kind of weird to (a) take a victory lap about an approval rating, and (b) to include the part of the quote that indicates lower approval ratings for people you work with.
Thank you Baltimore! Your confidence is humbling, but I won’t rest on my laurels, my team and I promise to continue working day and night to protect you and your communities through smart on crime policies that hold offenders accountable for their actions!

A patient was killed by blunt force trauma in the hospital. The two powerful parties who should know the most about this, BPD and JHU (which wants more armed police in/around their hospital), are denying involvement/offering information yet. Per
@jewstein3000
, reporting matters.
What is suspicious and worrisome about this article is that the reporter didn’t make clear where he got this information from about the autopsy. Not even if it was a BPD source or headquarters.
But the story came from BPD and BPD insisted it didn’t cause the man’s death. 1/
Like others on here, I witnessed and participated in the saga that
@TMPowell

When “The Wire” creator blocked

Seeing a lot of fellow white guys running with this narrative, and it feels very Vote Blue No Matter Who. There are folks doing great work at the Banner, but a relatively new, digital-only, paywalled publication isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for Baltimore. 1/
The “only the Banner can save us” talk is why I decided to sidestep my way out of mainstream journalism. It’s collaboration or nothing. It’s in the community not about the community — or nothing.
If you're wondering who is actually on the ground, making sure that

I have called and written to you, asking that you call for a ceasefire. I am an American Jew from an Israeli family. If you did not condone Hamas's atrocities on October 7th, you must not condone Israel's atrocities now.
This is from a new survey of Baltimoreans by Johns Hopkins University. The same Johns Hopkins University that wants to launch a private, armed police force in Baltimore, a majority-Black city.
This is the "patrol rifle" cited in Johns Hopkins University's draft policies for its private police department. They will be patrolling college campuses, a hospital, and the neighborhoods around them.
Even having grown up here, I've always been a little bummed that so many restaurants close at 10pm. Places that are open late serve folks who do shift work, tourists who get into town late, or just night owls (like me).
The two locations that are up for consideration are Cloud Chasers, a vape shop on S. Charles Street and Pizza Boli's, one block away on E. Cross Street.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley apologized Wednesday for comments last week in which he said the public wasn't alerted to a brutal attack in West Baltimore for reasons that would disparage the victims.
This isn't what most people think of as "campus police." This would be a private, armed, university police force patrolling – and having primary jurisdiction over – city streets and neighborhoods.
The jurisdiction articulated here for the proposed Hopkins police force extends an extra half- (Hamilton) or full block (Madison, Cathedral) beyond the footprint of the Peabody campus to the South, North, and West, respectively. Only St. Paul (East) is an actual campus boundary.
I also think the "squad" structure, by design, allows BPD/city government to maintain the delusion that one squad doesn't implicate BPD/policing as a whole.
