finding out some people measure their agar when they're pouring plates??? im at the laminar flow cabinet pouring on instinct alone, just tossing agar in like there's a rat pulling my hair
Woah, didn't see this coming! Brilliant end to an amazing week - congrats to the other prize winners and thanks to both
@MicrobioSoc
and my old and new friends for making
#MicroBio23
absolutely unforgettable 😄
Congratulations to our Annual Conference 2023

this is the kind of rage triggered by the sight of an anti-racism poster in
@UoABioSci
. given that management have yet to demonstrate this is an anti-racist school, its not difficult to see why postgrads here have told me they dont feel safe in our communal spaces
@aberdeenuni
This is a lifeline that
@UCUPostgrads
and students across the country have been fighting for, but with the possibility of inflation reaching >18% in early 2023 we need stipends that increase on the regular or we'll be in the same place in just a few months.
exited to be joining
@UKHSA
over the summer thanks to the
@UKRI_news
Policy Internship scheme! looking forward to joining the team and working at the intersection of research and health policy
i've been surprised and overwhelmed by the unsolicited support received from so many delegates at
#Microbio24
regarding the vandalism of these posters in my department and the hope that
@UoABioSci
will decide to take a stand against this overt racism in our communal spaces ❤️

@aberdeenuni
Disappointed to see our
#DecolonisingSBS
poster has been torn down from the notice board in my building's break room... I'd have hoped if someone took issue w/ it they'd have reached out to have a conversation with us instead of just binning something PhD students spent money on.
state of
@UoABioSci
at the moment 😭 member of staff throwing accusations of defamation at a colleague for posting in support of our dept's trans community 💀

I write in support of the trans community
@UoABioSci
. Know there are a lot of people that are supportive and not ok with the transphobic views that are circulating. We should all speak up - yes, we should all speak up that transphobia is not acceptable…

Kind of awkward to get an email from
@aberdeenuni
- which spent £35,000,000 on a new teaching building to boost its league table rankings - saying that "no university could offer [staff] a pay award based on current levels of inflation"...
interesting choice for my department to aim this communication at PhD students calling out transphobia and not members of staff harassing students and colleagues online. says a lot about what they consider appropriate conduct and what they do not 🤔
im going to be networking so hard
#Microbio24
wont know what hit them 🔥 if you have experience or interest in areas of global health equity (esp within HICs), connecting microbiology/AMR and inequality, or doing decolonising work, please reach out! would love to connect!
Only three days to go until Annual Conference 2024! We look forward to seeing you Monday 8 April–Thursday 11 April 2024 in Edinburgh!

my department is organising an EDI workshop led by a transphobic "activist". the deep-rooted culture of transphobia here really does come from the top down
LGB activist
@SimonFanshawe
has been invited to lead a workshop at
@aberdeenuni
School of Biological Sciences on 'diversity by design.'
Fanshawe, 67, has come under criticism by trans rights activists after being elected Rector of
@EdinburghUni
last week
If you didn't get to see my poster (P314) yesterday, you haven't missed your chance - it's up until 2pm today and I'll be around for the rest of the conference so say hi or drop me a line if you want to chat 🤠
#MicroBio23
Pleased to see
@UoABioSci
now encouraging seminar speakers to spend a little bit of their talk sharing their social justice work if they so wish... and proud to be part of the group of PGRs pushing for our department to demonstrate they value that kind of work 😍
#DecolonisingSBS
Very excited to be presenting my PhD work so far at
#MicroBio23
next week! If you're interested in the fitness cost of antibiotic resistance, come along to my poster P314 on Monday/Tuesday 🦠💰
@MicrobioSoc
@TomKnightSynBio
god-tier microbiology challenge: just pour all the broth back into the bottle and reuse the plates and broth while avoiding all contamination
tomorrow (14th december) at 12:00 on elphinstone lawn there will be a vigil to remember those who have died in gaza. please share widely because unfortunately an email to staff and PGRs in SBS about this event has been rejected by our departmental mailing list
i think my personal hell will be eternally working in a closed non-air conditioned room at an anaerobic chamber in 32°C heat while the new phd student at the bench behind me is processing his dog shit samples
someone once told me that your organisation's culture is defined by the worst behaviour it is willing to tolerate. what does this say about
@UoABioSci
?
New
#DecolonisingSBS
poster put up in the Zoology tearoom on Monday.
The last was vandalised, like many before it.
This one is about hope, who could argue with that message?
Woah, didn't see this coming! Brilliant end to an amazing week - congrats to the other prize winners and thanks to both
@MicrobioSoc

many questions remaining: how could someone so unfit to speak on equality be invited to run this? will this be dropped or will the university DO something about the culture of transphobia permitted to fester in SBS? & why do students have to perform so much of the heavy lifting?
After significant backlash by students and staff within the School, the event featuring
@SimonFanshawe
has been cancelled.

when i was getting interviewed for my phd the panel asked if id read any interesting papers recently and i panicked and started talking about how wombats make square poos
The number of new master's students in my department is down by over 70% from ~85-90 last year to just ~25 this year. The impact of the cost-of-living crisis on research and researchers is already showing; the failure of universities and funders to support us has consequences.
anyway i told them to just learn r and never approach me with such disgusting questions ever again... one student cried but ultimately i think it was a learning experience for him
NERC just sent an email out recognising that the cost of living increase means its PhD stipend isn't sufficient to live on.
Their solution isn't to increase it, it's to suggest students start selling Avon and sign up to clinical trials...

so im getting set up at my internship and my line manager said i should meet the team next tuesday because monday is something called a "bank holiday". anyone heard of this before? "bank holiday"...?
Accidentally carmelised some glucose media in the autoclave the other day and as a guy who works with E. coli it's most definitely the best-smelling mistake I've ever made 🍪😤

Horsfield’s tarsier at Taman Safari Indonesia. Elongated limbs allow tarsier to jump between branches, covering distances about 40x its body length, while large pads at tips of its long, thin fingers & toes make for an impressive grip.
very excited to launch a series of posters for
#DecolonisingSBS
- we're looking for new members to join and contribute to the many exciting things we've got planned for the coming year, so reach out to one of our members if you're based in
@UoABioSci
and are interested!
1/2 sickening to see an email about the importance of
#TransAwarenessWeek
from my department's management after they have repeatedly shown they are comfortable presiding over the culture of transphobia that infects this department from the top down
Come on
@BBCNews
this is an important story about a debilitating recurrent infection - please get the science right. People don’t become resistant to antibiotics, bacteria do.
@Charlie3002t
@JMJTravis
@PaulCaplat
@UoABioSci
OK, you can't answer, Charlie. And adult human female can't 'literally mean anything' - perhaps that's poor wording on your behalf, but it's preposterous. And biological woman can be defined - I've just done it. I will though do you the service of defining a human female.
Powerful prize lecture this morning from
@iruka_okeke
discussing who continues to be at the periphery of global health and wider microbiology research - "Knowledge about the Global South is in the Global South."

in charge of music for our friendsgiving tomorrow and I've accidentally made a playlist with over 8 hours of one-hit wonders 😳 can't even edit it down because they're all BANGERS 🙏😩
Supervisor floated the idea of me overseeing an honours project the other day... still trying to decide whether I'm happy just sabotaging my own future or whether to ✨diversify✨
i'll be presenting my poster during lunchtime today at
