The Irish Independent famously called for ...and demanded the execution of the leaders of the Easter Rising in 1916. They wanted to hang the bejaysus out of them!

'...those who “try and claim that there is a fixed national identity” do not understand Irish history.' This is @MichealMartinTD and his constant effort to fend off Irish unity. He should be banned from Bodenstown. https://t.co/nz3hOvQ3EV

The Taoiseach has said people who use the tricolour to suggest they “alone represent Irishness”, “dishonour our national flag”.

If it’s ‘just a line on a map’, let’s just rub it out. The reason NI existed was for its ‘structural discrimination’. It wasn’t designed to be a successful society. Now it’s raison d'être may be gone & people succeed here despite, not because of ‘NI’. We all deserve better.

That’s a big bump for SF and while the remaining centre-left parties account for another 19%, any chance of entering government still hinges on doing a deal with either FF or FG (presumably under new management ahead of the next election?)

Was Ben not on @BBCTalkback just yesterday debating a unionist economist Philip? Hardly an echo chamber?

I am an Irish citizen, born in Derry and living in Belfast. I gave expert evidence to the Convention on the Constitution in 2013. After the work done and promises made, it is remarkable that in 2025 I am still excluded from voting for my own President. A shared island?

A relatively modest reform that would bring Ireland into line with a widespread international practice. Appalling that Irish citizens here are excluded from voting in this Presidential election.

A very constructive and respectful discussion on BBC Talkback today between Ben Collins and Esmond Birnie on the subject of Irish unity. I know both men and hold both in high regard. We need these sorts of conversations.

It beggars belief that any politician could genuinely misunderstand the difference between changing the criteria and seeking clarity as to how the existing criteria will be assessed. The only conclusion is that this is orchestrated outrage in full knowledge that it is nonsense.

I agree with @AlexKane221b I want to hear Unionism’s vision for the future. Nobody should have anything to fear from a conversation. Let’s discuss the options and then vote first our preferred choice in the border poll which is coming. @IrelandsFuture @irishborderpoll

From my perspective as a unionist I think we must accept that, at the very least, a border poll is possible. So be prepared for it. Gameplan and strategise. Don’t be caught out as unionism was in 1972, 1979, 1985, 1993, 2019-24 et al. Never assume that anything is impossible

I know I could ignore, but I’ll bite. ‘Genuine unity’ will take generations post-unity, but I’m convinced it will come. ‘Genuine unity’ has never characterised our existence under the centuries-old Union. That’s the difference.

@chrisadonnelly @bjacollins @fotoole @SJAMcBride @bbctheview Chris, do you feel Ireland is ready for a genuine unity of North and South, or do you just want it too happen to justify the heinous actions of the Republican paramilitaries?
