I have never received as much positive feedback to a contribution on radio or TV as I have in the past 24 hours. Remembrance is a very difficult subject that won’t go away. Respectfully agreeing to disagree, & providing space to remember with dignity, offers the best way forward.
Yesterday, the active,armed & illegal loyalist gangs threatened to kill Irish Govt figures & return to massacring Catholics if they don’t get their way. The manner in which this has been glossed over & ignored by the media & PSNI betrays a double standard which can’t be tolerated
This kid is a tribute to his family, community and this country. The hateful bigot harassing him should be ashamed of himself & clearly has no understanding of Donegal’s own history of emigration.
Loyalist graffiti in Belfast overnight includes openly racist lynching threat to Leo Varadkar. Beyond condemnation, we need to hear from the NIO & PSNI as to why loyalist paramilitaries continue to be feted & not treated as a threat to peace like dissident Republican groups.
Hmmm. A system that saw a unionist serve as First Minister was perfectly ok…right up until the moment a nationalist was set to serve in that role.
Says quite a lot.
Jeffrey Donaldson to dissident Republicans this week: "I say to the evil people who carried out this heinous attack - and to their organisation - you are not the future…. We stand against you."
There is an onus on the DUP leader to use identical language to the UVF/UDA today.
The calculated decision by the Orange Order to attempt to revive parade disputes at Drumcree & Ardoyne betrays a nakedly sectarian agenda. Politicians of all hues should be calling this out. We don’t need to go back to that.
What happened last night was that someone within loyalism, recognising orchestrated protests were failing to gain any real support across NI, decided to trigger interface violence in a desperate attempt to sustain trouble.

Someone needs to tell this arrogant British politician that he was in Ireland today where Irish people & their politicians live. If he doesn’t get that, then he needs to read the GFA- granted, not always the done thing for those holding his Cabinet position.
Powerful protest image by the Cliftonville team. Through their ignorance and arrogance, the Irish FA now have a problem that could and should’ve been easily avoided.
How does this mark the Feast of the Assumption? No part of this is culture. It is all about hate & intolerance of the Other. No one should be giving cover to this & all responsible people should work to prevent this hate pyre going up next year.
Hugely significant takeaway from this election: Casting up the IRA & violent incidents from the past as a means to curb support for SF is a tactic that has had its day. Voters have decided that the party will be judged exclusively on the present & its policies for the future.
We see ‘outrage’ cynically deployed for political purposes here, yet the word does not come close to describing the sense of anger provoked by that video.
What is it about loyalism that requires hostility & hatred of the Other to be an integral part of ‘celebrations’?
What is very sad- and utterly contemptible- is the DUP’s attempt to return society to those dreadful days by trying to revive long-resolved parade disputes in Portadown & north Belfast.
Banging the Big Drum to distract from their post-Brexit failings.
"It is a very sad day.... that Orange feet are still not welcome on a particular stretch of road."

Antony Blinken: "We can never let the crimes Russia's committing become our new normal... bombing schools and hospitals and apartment buildings to rubble is not normal"
Loyalist anti-protocol demonstrations have made their way to Dublin on the day Leo Varadkar becomes Prime Minister.
“Our message to the new Irish Prime Minister is this - Northern Ireland will not have the will of the Irish Government imposed upon it.”
The Agreement is dead.
The DUP has no intention of rushing back to a Stormont led by a SF First Minister. It doesn’t represent NI but rather that section of unionism for whom equality is proving just too hard to stomach.
"The
@duponline

DUP leader
@J_Donaldson_MP
says his party will vote against the UK government's Windsor Framework Brexit plan this week
People Before Profit should be making it a priority to call out BBC NI for the inexcusable profiling afforded Jim Allister, who has the same no. of MLAs as PBP.
It’s a legacy of a society & media most comfortable airing/obsessing over unionist wants/concerns
We need to move on
“Nobody puts the flags up to offend anybody.”
Orange Order’s Mervyn Gibson on
@BBCTalkback
7th July 2023.
This is simply untrue. Flags erected in mixed residential areas, in front of new housing developments & outside business premises are done so to both offend & intimidate.
We’re doing something very wrong. This young mother & her child should be able to expect the police to protect them, the criminal justice system to come down hard on the bigots who sought to terrorise them & a local community to rally around them.
We’ve got to expect better.
The DUP stand humiliated. Their arrogance & sense of entitlement led them to foolishly believe they could avoid making the obvious compromise, recognising NI’s special status, & force a British Govt. to dance to their tune.
Every possible outcome now is a loss for them.
I will never support any policy that discriminates against my neighbour. No device or tool of discrimination will ever touch my hand nor will I support anyone who does

The treatment she received from some in school was appalling. To have sat GCSEs within days of giving birth & continued her studies is a testament to a personal fortitude & resilience people of all backgrounds will admire
BREAKING: The latest example of DUP hypocrisy. And let’s be clear: there is only one reason the DUP are opposed to Casement Park receiving public funding.
A child has now suffered severe burns. Another fell off a bonfire & needed to be air-lifted to hospital.
It is a scandalous dereliction of duty for any politician or community leader to oppose regulations & licensing around fires. True culture is not compromised by safety.
There’s a straight line to be drawn from Kate Hoey & Jim Wells’ utterances on Nationalist professionals to Unionist leaders contacting Queens to complain about Colin Harvey & refusing to state they’d work in an Executive led by a nationalist First Minister.
It’s the same mindset
Jeffrey Donaldson’s anger on BBC Evening Extra is betraying the depth to which he’s been humiliated over this sorry affair. This could not have gone any worse for the DUP Leader.
Mervyn Gibson claims there are “1 or 2 bonfires” causing concern. Says there’s no need for regulation & won’t condemn flag-burning.
Truth is there are dozens of bonfires with KAT, All Taigs are Targets, effigies, flags, posters, GAA symbols & other items.
Dreadful leadership.
Thousands of Apprentice Boys & loyalists will soon parade through Derry, just as Orangemen & loyalists did in Newry on the Twelfth.
We have a choice as a society: hatred, prejudice & fear or an acceptance of difference & recognition of how that can enrichen society.
Imagine the media framing if the Irish Govt published a paper entitled ‘Achieving Unity’ alongside the Sinn Fein leader, including creating a new North-South council, a day after the latter met with the dissident Republican leadership.
Perhaps the media could address this. 🤔
A mind conceived of writing such words. Others took on learning & singing them, clearly not for the first time, to bring laughter to an event purportedly to celebrate the Queen’s birthday.
This type of hatred runs very deep.
Depravity.
I don’t see Sinn Fein dropping any seats at this point. In fact, they’ve a good chance of gaining seats in East Derry & Upper Bann. Almost certain to be the largest party.
The
@sinnfeinireland
campaign was run on a theme of unrelenting positivity. It resonated across nationalism.
The absolute state of this. What is unhelpful is his adherence to a mindset which views the wants, needs & desires of political unionism as somehow superior to all else.
The BBC Radio Ulster bulletin at 4.30pm today claimed Israelis were “killed” by Hamas but Palestinians somehow “died” in Israeli bombardments.
Who makes the editorial decision to deliberately demean & diminish the value of a Palestinian life in such a manner?
Arlene Foster back to full on crocodile tone on
@BBCgmu
. Blame thrown in every direction except her own.
The DUP backed Brexit, threw away their golden chance to shape it & are now thrashing about like a wounded animal.
The leader of unionism has been forced to resign because his colleagues can’t stomach modest legislative protections for the Irish language in this part of Ireland.
Says it all.
‘KAT’ (Kill All Taigs) & ‘All Taigs Are Targets’.
Prominently positioned on multiple bonfires for hours, if not days, prior to pyres being lit.
Hatred of Others is intertwined with the 11th Night in a manner that can not be ignored any longer.
Struggling to recall a time when dissident Republican reps. were provided a mainstream media platform to issue thinly veiled threats- unchallenged- in the manner afforded the spokesperson of the illegal paramilitary LCC group.
The reason we don’t have same sex marriage, an Irish Language Act, a sexual orientation strategy & an anti-poverty strategy is not due to the absence of Stormont but rather the position adopted by one party, the DUP, on all those rights issues.
#SundayPoliticsNI
Of all people, Arlene Foster has a cheek to demand the resignation of anyone else in NI. To stubbornly stick with that position whilst loyalists continue to riot is deeply irresponsible & unfortunately all too reflective of her tenure as leader.
Just catching up with Mark’s excellent report. It’s simply breath-taking that the hardline sentiments are expressed whilst parading through the centre of overwhelmingly nationalist Derry. That level of entitlement is something to behold.
Very confident that, if John Pat Cunningham had been born a Protestant, Carla would not have posed for this photo nor worded such a shockingly offensive tweet.
That’s the problem in this society.
Honoured to support Dennis Hutchings today. A man of 80 years old, with severe heart and kidney problems, being dragged before the courts to appease Republicans. The same Republicans who are safe in the knowledge they will never be before the courts for heinous crimes.
Only a few weeks ago, Arlene Foster was reported as having met leading loyalists to discuss Brexit.
Imagine the furore if SF met dissidents who then threatened political opponents to give them an electoral advantage.
For context: In spite of Bloody Sunday, Ballymurphy, collusion etc. many local football teams, up to & including Northern Ireland, annually wear poppy armbands & hold minute’s silence for British war dead. There are British war memorials in some football & rugby grounds too.

Part of the reason for the Govt-sponsored efforts to silence voices not explicitly pro-Israeli in western nations is a recognition that, more than ever before, ordinary people recognise the injustice of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.

The Irish government stood idly by, joining others in turning their faces away from the injustice.
Blinne represents the vast majority of Irish people, proud that someone from our land made a stand against the evil taking place in Gaza.
Irish lawyer Blinne Ni Ghralaigh who is supporting South Africa's legal team at the ICJ, says the number of orphans caused by ‘Israel’s genocidal assault on the Palestinian population in Gaza’ has led to the need for a new acronym: WCNSF - wounded child, no surviving family.
If you’re going to argue that Nationalist parties must win 50%+1 in an election as the basis to trigger a border poll, then logically continuing UK sovereignty must be called into question when Unionist parties return less than that figure.
@ViewFrmStormont
Re the matter of Unionists singing God Save The King at Casement. Perhaps Windsor should host a few GAA games, complete with Amhran na bhFiann, in 2028 to demonstrate a reciprocal willingness to accommodate & move on.
The premise of this article by Gerry Bradley betrays the pervasive nature of the entitlement mindset I wrote about in last week’s
@irish_news
The BBC would not countenance writing such a piece about Ards/North Down Council not having a nationalist mayor over the next four years
Not only will Derry not have a unionist mayor over the next four years but once again it doesn't have a single unionist councillor on the city's West Bank:
A bonfire in a council owned leisure centre car park, funded by ratepayers, is wrong whether or not it’s made up of tyres, palettes, flags or furniture.
It’s a leisure centre. How is this difficult to understand?
Edwin Poots’ utterances are perplexing. It’s a very calculated attempt to sectarianise Covid, implying those pesky Catholics are to blame for the virus spike. A real ‘inside the mind’ moment.
The UVF is reviewing the “basis” for its ceasefire amid concerns “talk of joint authority has pushed the organisation to the edge”.
Elements of the UDA are understood to be following suit.
BREAKING: A car seized by police in relation to the Ards feud has been torched outside Dundonald police station where it was being kept.
The car was seized on Friday in connection with an attack in the Newtownards shopping centre.

The DUP's Ian Paisley has introduced new legislation in Westminster today which aims to require a "supermajority" (undefined) before any part of the United Kingdom can leave. If enacted it could mean that 50%+1 would not be enough to trigger a United Ireland.
@VirginMediaNews
The absence of self-awareness is truly frightening. The only possible explanation is that, for her, the Palestinian children, women & men living & dying in the nightmare scenario she depicts are simply not human & therefore unworthy of consideration.
Israeli Ambassador to the UK: "Just imagine how things would have looked... this huge missile, think about it falling in the middle of a city like Jerusalem.. look how populated it is. Just think about it hitting neighbourhoods & people & children"
Just imagine.
That such a ridiculous question is even asked betrays a lingering mindset within our media implying that being pro-Union is somehow more legitimate & reconciliatory than favouring Irish unity.
That needs to be decisively addressed, and soon.
What is more important to Sinn Féin? Short term - fixing Northern Ireland, or keeping momentum up for a united Ireland? Chris Donnelly says the party can do both

16-year-old Dlava Mohamed died in a car crash last August when she was on the way to a debs ball, and after her death, the local community rallied and began the process of organising a visa to bring the rest of the Mohamed family to Ireland
Mid & East Antrim Council has never had a nationalist mayor & isn’t going to over the next four years. Ditto Ards & North Down.
That’s d’Hondt in action, *not* discrimination.
Will BBC NI now be suggesting that the DUP step aside for SF councillors to become mayors there?
Donaldson clearly feeling the heat. Boxed into a corner over ‘new’ protocol (that’s very much still a protocol), he’s lashing out. Brits must do more. Europe hasn’t done enough. Nationalists must not talk of unity.
Always everyone else’s fault.
Sinn Féin is operating to an ‘ourselves alone’ agenda by running advertising campaigns in US newspapers calling for a border poll, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has said.
Prominent DUP figure & one-time leader, Edwin Poots, replying to a tweet about asylum seekers.
All because this academic has a perfectly legitimate interest in Irish unity.
2019 Belfast is a modern, progressive & welcoming city, embracing power-sharing & the diversity of its citizens.
It is an anomalous situation that 3 of its 4 MPs are from the DUP.
Rectifying that is entirely doable next month.
Nail on head. Israeli state apologists must be confronted in Ireland as elsewhere, not least as the terror regime wages a brutal campaign against innocent Palestinians in the days ahead.
Listening to unionist politicians & commentators discuss the minute details of any protocol deal is both amusing & revealing. Their core problem is failing to recognise this society has irreversibly changed. Unionism isn’t in control now. It has to work with & recognise Others.
The most logical & responsible reaction from Dublin to the latest NI election results would be to hasten preparations for constitutional change & a unity referendum. The pace & impact of political & demographic change in the north can no longer be denied nor wished away.
Clearly premeditated and orchestrated. Beyond contempt. Dishonours the memory of those they purport to be remembering today. They represent no one & offer nothing.
A British Govt Minister from London does not ever get to determine who represents people in any part of Ireland. This was a calculated decision to demean the all-island identity of Irish citizens.
In the interests of ‘goodwill’, Leo Varadkar wants people to stop referring to ‘the South’ as it’s ‘geographically incorrect’. On both grounds can we assume that, henceforward, he’ll cease referring to 26 Counties as ‘Ireland’?
Just catching the

If your grievance is based upon the casual attire worn by others on a street, in a lecture hall or student union, then the problem is entirely your own.

Flags erected around the Catholic Church, including this Rathcoole Sons of KAI flag.
We will never fulfil the promise of a shared society until low level intimidation like this is called out & ended, once & for all.
We need to nail, once & for all, the idea that expressing support for the Union is normal & acceptable but to endorse Unity is to provoke fear, antagonise & seek instability.
Irish premier stands by ‘unity in my lifetime' comment.
Mr Varadkar said: “Every time I say it, it is not the right time. So I would often ask the question, when is the right time?”.
By Danny Kennedy’s logic, the new UUP councillor will now resign & offer the Holywood/Clandeboye seat to the SDLP to secure Nationalist representation in the interests of community relations & a new Union.
After all, he didn’t mean it would apply just for unionists, did he?
If the PSNI establish a credible threat re port workers, it is imperative that the loyalist organisations involved are publicly identified. Let’s not forget that the NIO met with loyalist leaders only a fortnight ago.
Note the sectarian tune being played at this purportedly anti-Protocol parade/protest. The lyrics are about imagining a place where Catholics no longer exist.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu:
To our Christian friends around the world, Merry Christmas.
Christmas is supposed to be a time of good will to all men & peace on Earth. Well, we don't have peace on Earth, not in our part anyway & we certainly don't see good will to all men.
