This is what GP feels like atm. 🫤

Since I have decided to care less about what men think of me, I have lost many male followers. I like men, good men, decent and respectful and kind men. So my Q tonight, after reading
@DrJenGunter
and
@monaeltahawy
and the likes, do assertive women who tell the truth stay single?
Why Drs may ban patients from practices.
I’ve been a doctor for 21 years and I’ve banned maybe 5 pts out of the tens of thousands I’ve seen. My colleagues say similarly.
Reasons for banning:
- personal safety at stake
- inappropriate behaviour behind closed doors 1/
@mamoun_linda
@elizabethmurra
I tried speaking to someone abt it yesterday who said it’s terrible & she’s “pro Israeli, still a proud Zionist & pro Palestinian” I don’t know what that means but didn’t have the margin to engage so I dropped it.
Women are 15% more liable to suffer a bad outcome, and 32% more likely to die, when a man rather than a woman carries out the surgery, according to a study of 1.3 million patients.
A view from an Indian doctor:
"Social distancing is a privilege. It means you live in a house large enough to practise it. Hand washing is a privilege too. It means you have access to running water. Hand sanitisers are a privilege. It means you have money to buy them.
Lots of angry Covid + high risk pts today because they believe they can exit isolation on D7 (even if symptomatic) while we await clarification… thanks
@Dom_Perrottet
@pigletish
Let your Dr know. I ask abt trauma as a matter of course, any prior uncomfortable experience so she knows we can stop at.any.time. I talk her through it regardless and let her know she’s in charge and I’ll stop whenever she says.
Spectators watched as it slowly bled out until the day that it ceased to move forever. Created by Sun Yuan & Peng Yu, they named the piece, 'Can't Help Myself'. What a masterpiece. What a message." James Kricked Parr 7/ fin

It’s not a baby, it’s a foetus and it cannot survive without the person carrying it for at least 22-24 weeks. The mother is an established person. (I know you agree, but language matters because “a baby” is emotive)
I started at a new private billing practice today. Got asked no less than FIVE times in my first day to bulk bill. Said no 4 of those 5 times. When you’ve been advised of fees, at time of booking why would you then haggle at time of payment? & what does it say 🫤?
My son yesterday, upset at being outnumbered by his sisters, says “this is sexism!” To which one of my girls says “it’s bias but not sexism coz by definition, sexism refers to when the underprivileged are discriminated against on the basis of their gender.”
Posted with consent of a fellow female GP. GP is so much more than “just a script” or “just a referral” to see a real Dr. We are at risk of losing more and more of us with the collapse of GP, burnout and feeling devalued. Ignore at your peril.
I quit one of my jobs on Friday. They accepted my resignation Monday. I felt at once sad and relieved. I’d been miserable for mths despite many conversations. I’d jumped not knowing if I’d land ok. The same day I got another offer. The day after, yet another. And today another.1/
Double vaxxed, wear a mask everywhere inclg outdoors & intend to act like it’s mostly still a lockdown when we ease till I see what the cost is. No point overwhelming Health if I don’t have to
@mamoun_linda
@elizabethmurra
Yep no point. But… it was interesting because it’s only in the last couple of mths very obviously pro Israeli people are now saying “we are pro Israel/zionists AND we are also pro Palestine” … that’s a shift which doesn’t make much sense to me personally. So I disengage.
The robot arm finally ran out of hydraulic fluid in 2019, slowly came to a halt and died - And I am now tearing up over a friggin robot arm 😭 It was programmed to live out this fate and no matter what it did or how hard it tried, there was no escaping it. 6/
Meanwhile a non GP specialist friend is amazed/appalled at the working conditions of
#justagp
… there’s such a disconnect between all the work we do and how (little) we make for it compared to every other specialist out there.
So from tomorrow the patient Medicare rebate goes up by a WHOLE whopping 65 cents for a standard consult… 1.6% compared to 5.2% inflation. And we wonder why GPs are moving to charge gaps… 🫤
What can your GP do?
I can do:
- women’s health
- sexual health counselling
- contraceptive counselling
- Mirena IUD and Implanon
- preconception planning
- unplanned pregnancy counselling
- antenatal shared care
- preventive care- vaccines, DM, heart disease and more
Heard from AHPRA this am. Another anonymous complaint abt my social media presence. They’ve decided since it’s similar to the original one (also anon) to take no further action….
I’m leaving GP for the foreseeable future as of this week and I’m gutted abt it. I wrote an op-ed to submit and was in tears but I can’t do it. The grief is real. 🫤

My Dr daughter did not choose GP.
We need immediate system reform. 🚨🥁
I’m a GP. For the last 20 mths I’ve been a frontline HCW fighting Covid from hotel quarantine to respiratory clinics, vaccine advocacy & now HITH. As a solo parent I lined all my ducks 20 mths ago before wading into the work in case I got sick or died. I was among …
I’m a GP. My husband is a chemical engineer. I had AZ, he had Pfizer.
My kids are 15 and 17yrs. They made their own decisions to get Pfizer.

Keep in mind vaccines protect from severe disease, not no disease/infection. Hoping you’re all reaping the benefits of the vaccines and recover quickly and uneventfully.
Many years later... (as you see it now in the video) it looks tired and hopeless as there isn't enough time to dance anymore.. It now only has enough time to try to keep itself alive as the amount of leaked hydraulic fluid became unmanageable as the spill grew over time.4/
So
#MedTwitter
ever have a male partner sit in on a consult and give you the creepiest vibes? Interjecting. Talking over and for adult female pt. Have not had one of those for ages and had one this week and cannot stop thinking of it. My gut was on 🚩 for a solid hr.
In ED with my kid. Suspected acute appendicitis. Wait time 3 hrs just to be seen by a nurse. No option to have prior USS elsewhere to expedite. I’ve done everything I can prior to ED presentation. ED is packed.
if too much escapes, it will die so it's desperately trying to pull it back to continue to fight for another day. Saddest part is they gave the robot the ability to do these 'happy dances' to spectators. 2/

You know the biggest irony, the men asking are usually the plainest most average humans to walk the earth but seem to think they deserve Angelina Jolie.
Tuesday is pizza night at our house. I’m waiting for my order and the owner tries to talk me out of wearing my 😷. “Why you scared?” “I’m not, I’m careful.” He proceeds to tell me he knows HCWs at nearby hospitals who told him 😷 don’t work.
Just had an appointment with a new dentist.
Asked what I do for work.
“Oh are you going to specialise?”
“GP IS a speciality and we get prickly about being asked if we are going to specialise.”
Disappointed but not surprised to hear of colleagues’ reporting posts within a Drs for Palestine group to other colleagues, some of whom have gone on to verbally abuse & threaten them as well as report them to AHPRA for being antisemitic (for speaking up against genocide) 1/
When the project was first launched it danced around spending most of its time interacting with the crowd since it could quickly pull back the small spillage.3/
We are trained to first do no harm and to centre patient best interest in all consults. When it’s a poor fit or we feel unsafe we are no longer pt centered and can reasonably deny non urgent care. We are not obliged to see abusive or rapey pple behind closed doors. 5/
Despite all that most of us rarely ban pts- from seeing us, much less attending the practice. Usually, something huge has to have happened so the pile-on I saw last night abt Drs being god etc, especially GPs, was disappointing. We are already under significant strain. 6/
Last of 9 12-hr shifts today then I have 5 days off my original 4 week holiday I’d planned before resuming normal work for 2022. 🥴 Ignoring the emails to pitch in and help out blah blah and choosing to enjoy my 5 days …
When did the govt and public become responsible for keeping pharmacy owners in business? I see these as manipulation pure and simple. As with
#gpservices
as small biz owners, these are the swings & roundabouts of small biz.
I’m glad many are speaking up… “Australian research recently published in the MJA shows female doctors take their own lives at 227 per cent the rate of the general population. Male doctors commit suicide at 141 per cent the rate of other Australians.”
I got my third dose a week ago after placing myself on a shortlist with a mate as demand dried up & GPs were discarding unused doses. I’d not planned on taking any of those that doses could’ve gone to countries in need, but better in our arms than in the bin.
@isabelleRN_
@VSTMMJJ
@ScottMorrisonMP
Definitely not. Been on since 8am doing 12 hr shifts & am rostered on everyday till 9/1 with a single day off. In what was to be first leave since Dec 19 😑
- pts abusive towards staff & unwilling to do better despite being asked
- pts recording consults without staff/Dr knowledge
These are some common examples of why I and my colleagues have banned pts from seeing us or if we are owners, from the practice. 3/
On few occasions I’ve had the discussion with pts that “we don’t seem to see eye to eye and I feel I’m not a good fit for you and you’d be better served seeing one of the other Drs here or elsewhere. I can suggest some. That’s not a ban; 4/
- poor fit
- abuse of reception and other staff
Some examples:
- male pts with female Drs exposing themselves, ejaculating is a common one
- male pts inappropriately coming onto female Drs whereby she’s uncomfortable is another
- pts swearing, abusive in rooms 2/
To me, I like
@JaneCaro
’s definition, which fits with my own- “feminism is actually a fight by one half of the population to be taken seriously by the other half.”
I admit I live a very boring & cautious life but all the pics & videos of pple up close sans masks, dancing etc during Covid at Xmas parties has me feeling so nervous. 😬 (in Covid + states and overseas)
Anyone else see that restrictions easing will flood the system with cases especially among the unvaccinated?
Multiple pple saying their industry doesn’t mandate vaccines so as anticipated Gladys et al can say what they want but the unvaccinated won’t be sitting at home 🤔
It’s ok to acknowledge that we cannot give a pt what they want/need as long as there’s nothing urgent and send them on to someone else. It’s actually safer (general comment here) 7/
Genuine question- how do strong, independent, outspoken women with a drive and passion for equity, justice, etc, if heterosexual, find decent men? Or do you simply accept singledom as the price you pay to do what feels right?
Lockdowns are a privilege. It means you can afford to be at home. Most of the ways to ward the Corona off are accessible only to the affluent. In essence, a disease that was spread by the rich as they flew around the globe will now kill millions of the poor.
My kids have ethnic, Muslim first names.
We are no longer recognisably Muslim.
A kid heard one of my kids’ names & blurted out “are you Muslim? So a terrorist?”
Pple who don’t live with racism, Islamophobia & more have no idea. This is a daily, regular thing all our lives.
@drcopps
Honestly, I begin by offering plastics inclg in kids and let the parent decide. It’s not worth the risk to me personally or professionally if the parent, any parent, was willing to pay for plastics but didn’t want to say etc. It also means I can write ,offered plastics, declined
Isn’t it funny how many Muslim women including those in hijab identify as feminists, and how many Muslim men really get upset abt it? I discovered yesterday I’ve been muted by at least 2 of them. Alrighty then....
@cokeefe9
@9NewsAUS
I actually think she’s done a good job despite all the pressures. Not ideal etc but looking at Melbourne I’ve always been glad to be here instead
Pple are shocked and amazed that GPs get no paid maternity leave, no paid annual leave, sick leave…ie no paid leave. And no paid superannuation. That all comes out of our post tax take home pay. If I sit in clinic for 8 hrs and see 0 pts I earn $0 for my time. No wages.
Just had a fellow FRACGP ask how much a bulk billing GP takes home (post tax, and pre indemnity/registration/CPD, no super or leave because we are self employed) post tax on a std 15 min consult that’s bulk billed- abt $16. At 4/hr that’s < $70/hr. Why stay?

Anecdotally, women whose partners have vasectomies or are past childbearing are far more interested in sex. (Tons of women’s health here)
I’ve not received a cent from Big Pharma or my vaccine education & advocacy for mths on IG & once it’s safe to do so I’ll be vaccinating my 10 yo. Because
#science
Once a complaint has been lodged there’s irretrievable damage done and I’m not aware of any MDO that will encourage ongoing therapeutic relationship. So those are my reflections. I’ve no opinion on the initial poster and their experience as I wasn’t there but I wanted to 15/
@SParnis
Honestly, today, I feel ready to give up. It’s all too hard, too insurmountable and I know I’m not alone. Many fellow GPs are feeling worn down. Will try again tomorrow…
…the first HCWs to be vaccinated (Pfizer) on Feb 22, & as soon as it was legal for my healthy kids ages 12,14 & 15 to be, they were vaccinated; their only condition was it not take away from kids in need (I’d had offers prior from the stock for vulnerable 12-15 yo)
@annabarbarella
I was distressed reading it too and the anti-GP sentiment. I couldn’t sleep because of it because daily among peers we hear of pts who are grossly inappropriate or abusive & the distressed colleagues who have to deal with it. We are under no illusions we are god etc.
@coopesdetat
On my first week of leave, thanks to
@Dom_Perrottet
et al I’ve been called back to help out. 12 shifts in the next 17 days, initially just for 8 hrs that blew out 10 hrs and did my head in yesterday. Meanwhile pple losing it over having to wear masks indoors. 😞🤬
@doc_bipolar
Good on you. In psych it’s called appropriate self disclosure and used sparingly for pt benefit can be immensely helpful. Many of the rules we were taught place barriers between us as humans & pts who are suffering.
Now to masks. Currently there’s no mask mandate in NSW with no requirement in most venues inclg last I checked, private surgeries, of which GP clinics are a part. Despite this most clinics I know have a mask policy but leave the type of mask to the drs and other staff. 8/
Then, based on that information proceed or go elsewhere. To be honest if anyone was to report me to AHPRA, that therapeutic relationship has broken down and my MDO would advise I terminate the relationship asap. I’ve done that as 👆🏾 a couple of times & rung the pt ..13/
@johncusack
That’s the classic comeback I’ve repeatedly gotten. As if two independently horrible things can’t both be equally true & worth grieving- the event of Oct 7 AND the disproportionate reaction of the Israeli government & its supporters to use that as an excuse to commit more horror
