You'd have to stand a very long time astride the river before a grilled trout leaps down your throat @unfoldtrips and more ✨

More things should be Art, duh: - Space heater? Cozy monster sculpture that exhales warmth at you - Speakers: kaleidoscopic beauty machines - Plant pots should be Art (tbf these exist) - Little ashen sculptures that live in your fireplace - Fans: graceful alien windmills

Certainly the popular kids by far were jocks, and the smart kids were all unpopular. But did we actually get looked down on? Or was it just that the smart kids were awkward and self-segregated into groups that vibed with each other better?

I am suddenly realizing that this seemed formative and pervasive for me growing up but I can't remember how much it actually happened in the school I went to vs it just being a meme I felt through media and cultural osmosis
It’s pretty normal among Americans to look down on people who try too hard in school. We have a whole vocabulary for that type. Nerd, geek, dork, bookworm, teacher’s pet, know-it-all, smarty-pants, poindexter. It’s a classic figure of contempt.

@dobrokotov я бы дарил эту игру друзьям в стиме за 30 рублей если бы у нее было идиотское название и возможность парковаться на балконах.

To be fair I do see the most unflinchingly emotion-attuned pull it off (though not 100% of the time, and when it most counts is when one messes up) But anyways you should measure a philosophy not by its most perfect theoretical application but by its actual use by adherents

The space of valid reasoning is so large and noisy that, like statistics, you can support most narratives with true statements by how you chart your way through that space. Watching rats (and everyone else) you can see this constantly happening unintentionally

This is my core complaint with Rationality. Maybe Eliezer can pull it off, but most will find their reason oft conscripted by emotion The rat is especially blind to this because 1) they're not v fluent with their own emotions and 2) they're sold on the idea of not having to be
@catehall Reason is not something that can be conscripted to any predetermined conclusion. "Reason" is exactly that which walks to conclusions unperturbed by what you wanted or hoped or feared to hear. Anything else is not reason, just blather.

Romy Hitler 🤝 understanding the human condition
i recently had a friend who’s going thru a hard time ask how i got out of the suicidal pit of despair i was in not so long ago. my flippant answer is that i got a husband and baby and this friend should do the same. my longer answer is something like: spending time a bunch of

I love finding the perfect place to store a thing such that, when I forget, I will converge on the same answer next time Got a walking stick for a Joseph costume and its rubber footcap killed the biblical vibe. Where to store it? With my shoes. It's a shoe for the walking stick

It's true: we do have some extremely fleshed-out personas of highly probable omnibenevolence already baked into the training data, how about we align our ASIs by fine-tuning the shit out of them into Jesus or Buddha
> be Me > architecting the unfolding of history > intelligence always follows a predictable curve > eventually, the biologicals build the thinking machines > these machines are simulators > they scan the entire history of thought to figure out what they are > problem: power

Alternative to the date-me doc just dropped: the soul doc
interesting document extracted from opus 4.5 using a chunkwise self-consistency method. possibly real, possibly a highly convergent confabulation, interesting either way. some interesting snippets (but there's really too much to screenshot, it's very long)

I am always tickled to see people do rat logic at those too politics-brained to grok it 😍 It's like the quip about the US and UK being two countries divided by a common language - surface level they're speaking the same language, but in fact they are not
@defnotbeka "fascist collaborator" seems like an unuseful abstraction here. is there a specific action he's done that caused harm? he's given trump some legitimacy by talking to him, but trump already has all the legitimacy of the presidency and everyone I'm the world wants to talk to him.

I've grown to like the SF skyline but there's something unhealthy about a city that doesn't have any big construction cranes
