For the first time ever in human history, Christmas is on 25/25/25. This phenomenon will never happen again.

My latest: “Can you over estimate the time that it would take you to compile/copy the invoices requested and let me know when you have a chance?” one school official wrote. “Hopefully, when I let them know the cost they will not want to do it."
A Lexington parent requested records from the local public schools. But he caught the district intentionally overestimating costs, in hopes of driving him away.

Another take on the "Massachusetts Malaise" from @JoanneLeeJacobs also argues for more attention to "background knowledge."
"Back to basics" won't be enough to raise reading skills and end the Massachusetts Malaise. https://t.co/VXrmP5LF4k

It's hard to believe, yet true, that there were details I had to cut from this 5,000 word story. I also have more to learn.

@natwexler Here's her critique: https://t.co/zhtaxMVdo6 And my report: https://t.co/W7Cpi8Zxm7 Part of my goal was just to make it clear that decline is not universal, or inevitable. I hope to report more on the details of what works, but I hope this story at least did that.

Our math and reading scores have been declining for a decade. The “Southern Surge” should be a wake-up call.

Appreciate this critique from @natwexler on my (and other) coverage of the Southern Surge. I didn't intend to suggest that phonics was the only thing they're doing, but I may have relied on it too much as a shorthand. Hope to do more coverage on knowledge-building lit curricula!
.@natwexler sounds 🚨 that Southern Surge media discourse can leave readers thinking that the reforms are “just phonics.” Louisiana & Tennessee’s work started with knowledge-building, book-rich curricula (which also included solid phonics materials). She worries that detail

some great tidbits. and yes, if you're in greater boston, don't miss your chance to see OBAA on VistaVision!
Fascinating story about how @thecoolidge is one of the four theaters in the world to show One Battle After Another on VistaVision, including the tech needed to pull it off and its connection to PTA. One of my favorite theater experiences in recent years!

The first state to combine the Mississippi education reforms with blue state per pupil funding levels is going to create super children

New England schools are failing. Time to take a lesson from Louisiana and Mississippi.
