Lots of critical ink has been spilled about inflation in mental health diagnosis, the risk of patients overidentifying with diagnosis, etc. This is an interesting, countervailing take: simply equipping someone with the lang. to describe their experience has a therapeutic effect.
Clinicians across medicine are familiar with an odd feature of descriptive diagnoses: they can bring patients real relief and provide an explanation, even without offering causes. In a new paper, @AlanLevinovitz and I call this the Rumpelstiltskin effect. Links below.
