WHO presents tobacco tax hikes as health measure to reduce smoking. But in 2022-23, when global inflation peaked in 30 yrs, 32+ nations (avg is 8-10/yr) used it as fiscal tool for revenue shortfall. Worse, <0.46% of tax is spent on preventing 8bn tobacco deaths/yr. #StopTheLoot
I critique WHO's claim that raising tobacco taxes is the single most effective measure to reduce smoking. Thanks to Prof David Sweanor, who has spent four decades to prevent tobacco mortality, for deepening insight and scope with inputs. Article link: https://t.co/wujruAQ1o5

Important comment on widening gap between scientific consensus and public perception of relative safety of e-cigarettes vs smoking, and what can scientists do about it (apart from WHO/Bloomberg groups toning down their rhetoric). https://t.co/c4L6x9fHGa

A refreshing view: When people who smoke switch to nicotine vapes, studies show they often change to better diets, get more exercise and MAY use less illicit drugs. The opposite of"harm."
The United States should liberalize the market for e-cigarettes. If people choose to use e-cigarettes, they might be able to reduce their drug intake. Although e-cigarettes are not a good thing either, at least they cause less harm to the human body than drugs.🤔🤔🤔🤔😀😀😀😀😀

Prohibition created two markets for drugs. Prohibition never deterred or prevented an unregulated supply, nor has it reduced demand. Prohibition has create an unreliable, unpredictable and unsafe underground market that is highly lucrative. A market run and managed by gangs

In rare review of e-cigarette use in South Asia, authors lament lack of local research, and state: "India, where e-cigarettes are banned, policymakers should reconsider existing regulations in response to emerging scientific evidence." @mohfw_India

Welcome news: WHO just added cytisine, a plant-based alkaloid structurally similar to nicotine, in its essential list of meds for smoking cessation. Being much cheaper, and also effective, it will be highly beneficial in LMICs. https://t.co/WJH1Q789zc

People (whether supporting THR or not) must read the article "The Courage to Embrace the Science Around Nicotine Addiction" https://t.co/IyPXeF1Jo8. Health professionals hesitant to support #Vapes in smoking cessation must read it. Some extracts

This is an incredibly important point. I demonstrated the substitution among high schoolers and young adults here: https://t.co/cpH7Xq1bwD. The fact that smoking has almost disappeared is indeed a huge public health victory.
@BradRodu @PostOpinions @DrLeanaWenMD For those inclined to misrepresents this chart and punt a moral panic about the 6.11 million vapers (34%) who have never smoked, please be calm. Most of these are part of a huge win for public health - young adults who would have defaulted to smoking in the absence of vaping.

Our RCT published today in @AnnalsofIM found #vaping is THREE TIMES more effective than NRT in disadvantaged smokers (n=1045) After 6m ➡️28.4% of the vaping group had quit vs ➡️9.6% in the NRT group (continuous abstinence, CO verified) More ⤵️ https://t.co/K5q8TNsUzX

Combustible tobacco delivers over 7,000 chemicals, many carcinogenic. Nicotine vapor products contain ~100 chemicals—dramatically reducing exposure. Tobacco harm reduction recognizes this differential risk to improve public health.

This Indian study restresses the need to include NRTs in SLT cessation programs. They should be given free or subsidised as most SLT users can't currently afford them. @MoHFW_INDIA

NZ government stop smoking services to provide free vape kits to help adults who smoke to switch. 🥳This is good 👍🏾 🥳 Is there evidence it will be effective? Yes. For stopping smoking, vaping is twice as effective as nicotine patches/gum/lozenges (also provided free in NZ to

The government will be supplying vaping starter kits to stop-smoking services around the country next week to help adults quit.
