Issue 2, the GOP-backed constitutional amendment on the Nov. ballot would also prevent Ohio 17-year-olds from voting in primaries if they will turn 18 by the general election, as they have since 1981. Just in time for 2024 primaries. Wonder why the GOP wants to do that?
So what was priority one for the GOP super-majority in the Ohio General Assembly in lame duck session? A Senate bill which would take nearly all power away from Ohio Board of Education and give it to the governor. After Tuesday's election, Dems hold a majority of seats.
The Republicans on the Ohio Redistricting Commission made a really disingenuous argument yesterday in a rejecting a Democratic-drawn map. It would, they said, disadvantage Republicans because they would lose seats. Well, yes., that's the point. You are over-represented now.
This proposal is based on the plan Michigan operated under in the last cycle. It takes elected officials out of the redistricting process entirely. And it works. In Michigan, voters choose their elected officials, instead of elected officials choosing their voters.
Groups are starting to collect signatures to get a constitutional amendment on the Nov. 2024 ballot that would scrap Ohio's current system for drawing legislative and congressional district maps and create a new one.

Just for clarification purposes. what the junior senator from Ohio is saying is incorrect. It is not the president or DoJ prosecuting Trump, it is an independent special prosecutor. Not much of a "banana republic."
Is there anyone who doubted for a minute that the Republicans on the commission would wait until the last possible hour to pull a stunt to avoid a truly independent map-making process?
Prove it,

If 4 GOP members of the redistricting commission had waited 7 minutes Monday night, they would have had maps from independent mapmakers instead of the warmed-over "bait-and-switch" maps they passed...why you ask? I'll tell you why....

Redistricting commission passes its GOP switcheroo map, 4-3. Cupp, Huffman, DeWine and LaRose vote yes. Sykes, Russo, vote no. The independent map-makers had the rug pulled out from under them. Back to the Ohio Supreme Court we go.

The Supreme Court of Ohio today invalidated the proposed Ohio House and Senate districts maps in their entirety and ordered the Ohio Redistricting Commission to be reconstituted, convene, and adopt entirely new General Assembly maps.
OPINION:
Right before they voted on the bait-and-switch map, Speaker Cupp solemnly intoned that the commission MUST adhere to the order of the court to have a plan by midnight. Hmmm.....they had never complied with an order of the Ohio Supreme Court before? Why now?
Now they've found a new dodge to get around the Ohio constitution: the "independent state legislature theory".....
Commentary: Ohio GOP leaders simply don't care what you think

Hamilton Co. official election results have Ohio 28 House District flipping red to blue. Democrat Jessica Miranda now leads incumbent Republican Jonathan Dever by 56 votes - 0.1% difference. An automatic recount will take place next week.
In Ohio-1 House race, Democratic challenger Kate Schroder out-raised incumbent Republican Steve Chabot by 2-1 in the 2nd quarter of 2020. Nearly $624,000 for Schroder; $309,157 for Chabot.
And, in their zeal to tear apart the Democratic plan, they apparently thought no one would notice that they hadn't produced a map of their own - despite a court order to do so by this morning.

If you are an Ohio voter who feels you are out of step with the GOP-controlled legislature, take a look at this poll. It shows clearly the GOP legislators are out of step with the majority of Ohioans.

The fact is

and the ORC had all year to work on new maps. There is every reason to believe they will submit the same maps that were found to be unconstitutional last year. I'm taking all bets on that...
The Ohio Redistricting Commission will reconvene on Sept. 13 to begin the map drawing process. I’m encouraging an efficient process to have completed maps by Sept. 22 to give our county BOEs the time they need to prepare for the November General Election.

Voters said no to controversial Butler Co. State Rep. Candice Keller in a 3-way race for a state senate seat. State Rep. George Lang, 49.5% to Keller's 32.5%. Keller, among other things, had blamed Dayton shootings on Barack Obama, transgender people, etc. She's gone.
When asked by Minority Leader Russo, both Gov. Mike DeWine and Secretary of State Frank LaRose said they had not seen the state legislative maps until they were presented to the commission. Minutes later, both voted for maps they were seeing for the first time.

Today's automatic recount in the 28th Ohio House District race produced the same result as last week's official count - Democratic challenger Jessica Miranda defeated incumbent Republican Jonathan Dever by 56 votes out of nearly 55,000 cast. Miranda's margin of victory was 0.1%.

Here we go....Republicans on Redistricting Commission are about to ram through a slightly tweaked version of a state legislative map that has already been rejected once by the Ohio Supreme Court. "The majority has hijacked this whole process,'' says Democrat Vernon Sykes.
Very amused to read the tweets of all these MAGA Republicans who have been trashing "Sleepy Joe" as a doddering old fool who are now accusing him of being the cunning mastermind behind the situation in Russia.
Make up your mind, people. Pick one of the other.
Exactly the point I made in the story I did when the bill was introduced. I asked if he had any examples in Ohio, and Cirino told me he did not. They've built a straw man and now thumping their chests over knocking it down.
The schools Cirino cites to justify his attack on Ohio's public universities are: Harvard, MIT, and Penn.
Works out, these schools are a) not in Ohio, and b) not public.
Let's make one more thing clear re

Trump and his allies have seized on media reports of pushback from unnamed Secret Service sources to paint Hutchinson’s sworn testimony as unreliable.
But none of the people who have disputed Hutchinson’s story have done so under oath.

Ohio Statehouse GOP leaders failed to come to agreement and notify Gov. Mike DeWine of a decision on their co-chair of the Ohio Redistricting Commission by a Thursday deadline, so Friday's meeting was cancelled a week before map deadline.
