having worked a service job where customers walked up and ordered something as their first sentence, and a job where customers asked a perfunctory "hi how's it going" i can tell you that the latter is a lot nicer and makes you feel a lot more human.
Have gotten comments from gen z questioning the point of the American greeting ritual. I used to feel the same way in my first service jobs. I thought it was "fake," performative, extractive, "emotional labor" (though we didn't have that phrase). Here's how I changed my mind

i'm always saying that noone knows how to do photography for black and white films any more and that's why new black and white never looks very good.
Okay yeah let’s talk about it. It’s because we literally don’t use those lights anymore to light anything, let alone women. And also because modern actresses don’t want to be lit this way. 🧵

don't think it does anyone any favours to assume that these things are foregone conclusions. reform are clearly trying to wholesale import culture wars from the US and it's good to not assume that therefore things will go the same way in the UK.
It was only a matter of time before this started happening in England. We all warned of this, and now it’s inevitable that women are going to start losing rights over their own bodies. What America does, the UK follows. Barbaric.

felt like there was a singular way to read the film (allegory for transness) that wasn't particularly interesting or nuanced. was too interested in its own visuals at the expense of fleshing anything out. aimed at an 'in' group. and most of all, it was boring.
can someone explain the i saw the tv glow hate to me that isnt just "she didnt transition at the end".
