So far this Ashes, the total scores are:
Australia 1,850 for 58
England 1,809 for 55
After 943.4 overs, there are just 49 runs between the sides.
Good grief what a series.
The players will walk off at 6.43 this evening with at least 30 minutes of light where they could play.
Tomorrow will be a washout, as might Sunday.
Does cricket need to be less stubborn with timings?
(I say this not as an England supporter, but as a cricket lover.)
What is cricket for if not for entertainment?
Why does play need to start as late as 11? Why must it always stop at 6.30 when the sun is shining?
Will today be the day when long-held frustrations lead to practical changes?

In Tests, Ravi Jadeja averages 36 with the bat and 24 with the ball.
He’s also arguably the best fielder in the game right now.
IMHO, should be spoken about as one of the all-time all-rounders.

In the Southampton bio-bubble, Shane Warne was lured from his dinner by
@philtufnell
to join us for some concourse cricket.
He was meant to bowl one ball, but inevitably stayed for longer.
Doubt he knew just how pathetically excited we all were just to see him bowl up close.
It’s no exaggeration to say that had an Associate team had a set of results like England’s, people would be questioning their presence at the tournament.
This has been a remarkable capitulation.

India look like they’re on a relentless march towards their destiny.
Teams used to speak about playing Manchester United and being beaten by the time they got to the tunnel.
It’s the same feeling of inevitability with this India side.
“I think if the shoe was on other foot I’d have had to have a deep think about the spirit of the game.
Would I want to win a game in that manner? For me the answer is no.”
Ben Stokes has had his say on THAT incident.

Mark Wood, whatever he’s doing on the field, is a magnificently fun cricketer.
He’s just become the first cricketer EVER to hit Pat Cummins for three sixes in a Test innings.

Favourite stat ahead of the new football season:
2023-24 will be the first campaign since 1930-31 that none of Stanley Matthews, Peter Shilton or Gianluigi Buffon will be featuring.
🤯
First ball back on and Litton Das slips on the outfield.
Next ball he slips again and is run out.
Umpires in an impossible position, but can understand why Bangladesh will be frustrated they’re playing again so quickly here.

I just don’t understand bowling first given the circumstances today.
Searing heat, massive pressure, famously flat pitch, opponents who’ve recently wilted in a run chase…
Why give them the freedom to put a score on?
One of the great sports acceptance speeches.
Hard not to like someone who once, when struggling for form, said:
“Most Australians hate me, but I love the cap and will keep trying to hopefully win them over one day.”
If your radio theme tune is recorded by an orchestra in sessions from London to New York, you’re doing something right.
The Steve Wright show theme is an absolute classic 👌
39,877 times he’s charged in for England in Test matches.
700 times he’s wheeled away to celebrate success.
Incredible achievement from a man who looks fitter and stronger than ever.
A lot of comparisons with a run-out at the non-striker’s end (Mankad).
But Bairstow wasn’t trying to gain any advantage, so there’s significant difference there.
100% correct decision from the umpires, the debate purely around Australia’s choice to stick with appeal.
Two months ago Jos Buttler scored 101* from 67 balls in a T20.
Today he’s 25* from from 186 balls in a Test.
Not many players could do both of these things.

A special word for
@KBrunt26
who faced a challenge I’m not sure any commentator ever has - broadcasting as your wife tries to win the tightest game of cricket.
She was simply brilliant on
@bbctms
.
It really feels like Ben Stokes and this England team are doing something far deeper than just winning games of cricket.
They’re combining the bravery and dynamism of T20 with the thrilling narrative of five day Tests.
We’re so lucky to be seeing it.

You do what gives you the best chance of winning. Not what the “opposition least want.”
Keeping India to a manageable total on a dry pitch and then hoping the pitch skids on under lights is their thinking. Pitch is slow and grippy. Jadeja would be v difficult right now
England players have swapped shirts during the line-ups in recognition of those living with dementia and the confusion that can come with the condition.
So simple, but such a powerful message.

Before getting a hammering from Australia, I want to make the following clear:
I’d be saying the same if the weather had benefitted England.
If a draw was deemed so much less acceptable for the World Test Championship which DID have a reserve day, why wouldn’t an Ashes Test?
‼️ In My Opinion: Test cricket should do all it can to allow games to finish.

after rain forced a draw in the fourth test.
Henry Moeran (

🤔 What are your thoughts? ⬇️
We still sometimes get criticism from those that say:
“No-ones cares about women’s sport, why do you cover it?”
I really hope pictures like this put that notion to bed.

No one was asked for as many autographs and selfies as Shane Warne, and not once did I see him turn anyone down.
Always engaging with a smile and a laugh - he just seemed to relish making fans happy.
Few can have done more to make the game what it is today.
Facts I’ve learnt about Hyderabad…
- It has the biggest film studio in the world
- It has the biggest snow(!) park in the world
- There are 3,600 biryani restaurants in the city
According to the Kookaburra website, an international white hall costs £120.
By my count Jos Buttler has sent 9 out of the ground never to be seen again.
That’s over £1,000 worth of cricket balls 😳
